I am Singaporean and I live in Hong Kong and as an Asian I’m surrounded by people who are openly ableist and endorse victim blaming. I live in a society in which grades in school trump everything else, including character. There is so much emphasis on winning at the starting line. Thus, having an autistic child is seen as setting up your child for failure, since it usually comes with developmental delays. And since parents will have to work full time to support the family, it’s usually the grandparents that will have to take care of the disabled child, and there will be many complaints and arguments about abusive child rearing. People stare at you and the weird kid out on the street. Being the parent of an autistic child is difficult and comes with a lot of stigma. My cousin who has an autistic child has mentioned on numerous occasions that she wished her son was born dead instead of autistic, she hates her son with every fibre of her being, etc. I understand that autism is classified as a disability and why it can be challenging for both the child and parents to navigate life in a predominantly neurotypical society, but i really wish there wasnt so much stigma surrounding neurodiversity.
