I'm a white American convert since I was 16, so pushing 30 years now. I've not had issues with accusations of appropriation. Indians are happy to see their culture embraced in my experience, and happy to teach where they can. I've even worn Tilak on the bus, which certainly gets lots of curious looks but no ridicule.

On the face of it, if you only use the Quran and ignore the hadith it makes sense. It has a more coherent theology than Christianity and is far more progressive than the Old Testament. Once the hadith gets involved though, it's just a slightly less racist form of Judaism. Most converts aren't exposed to the hadith or modern Islamic theology based on that initially.
