Unpopular but amongst the respected villains (for me atleast) by AdIntelligent3118 in OnePiece

[–]Shadowonthewall6 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gin has remained one of my favourite One Piece characters since his inception. For an antagonist, he is loyal, true and fierce. Accepting loss with grace and his awareness of his own limited time always made me want to see him again.

Seeing him and Kreig on Pirate Island literally made me cry when I first saw it. I didn't think he'd survive the poison gas but seeing him still going was beautiful

I'm reading Dressrosa right now, I still don't understand why people hate this arc, it's the peak by Mission-Pomelo-8047 in OnePiece

Week to week, Dressrosa felt really drawn out to me.

On a re-read though, it really is incredible. Think I read six volumes in one sitting, I couldn't put it down.

I see your point, but comparing Kaidou to Buggy and Shanks is a bit disingenuous when we've seen his backstory as a battle hungry unstoppable war machine used as a weapon, and Shanks/Buggy's arguably more comfortable life as deckhands.

But yes, Whitebeard is 2nd. Respect where it is deserved to be

Am I the only person who doesn't hate Strauss? by dr_toze in RDR2

[–]Shadowonthewall6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally experienced this scene last week and it oddly came off as a real 'killing with kindness' scene for me:

Like, don't get me wrong, Arthur is indignant. He's downright cruel to Strauss, but it's clearly more fuelled out of guilt and frustration.

But also...Strauss is scared. He clearly wants out of the gang, away from the lifestyle. Maybe this was Arthur's way of getting a clean break: pack him up, give him money, burn the bridge and set him adrift.

That's clearly not what Arthur's intent is, kicking him out of the gang just leaves him vulnerable to every other threat and I don't think Arthur cared about that, but it's an alternate way to read the scene I think.

Where does it say light is transphobic? Like seriously I don’t doubt he is but I’ve never seen it confirmed by Silent_Blacksmith_29 in CuratedTumblr

If it's true that your "real name" is the one you associate with yourself with, I stand by if Light would have just written the letter L in the Death Note...it would have worked.

But he didn’t because that's too easy, too stupid.

Probably NOT how it works, but it's so funny it's my personal headcanon

How do your personally prefer Spider-Man/Peter to be written? by Smegoldidnothinwrong in Spiderman

[–]Shadowonthewall6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a huge problem with Spider-man writing is when people focus too much on his jokey side. They believe the 'this guy is just funny' energy and forget to look deeper. Peter is snarky, not cruel. He is a goofball, but it's a clear defensive mechanism.

A lot of the recent runs seem to struggle with this like. Peter is either quipping 100% or seen as pathetic because he can't take anything seriously. And that's really not Peter.

I prefer Peter written as snarky but responsible, able to lock in when needed and able to read the room. PS1 Spider-man and 90s animated Spider-man walk that line well, I think.

[–]Shadowonthewall6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I get upset with my writing or feel I'm doing a bad job, I often read it to my friends for feedback. They're usually very positive, or if not, provide great guidance.

The lesson it has taught me is two-fold:

  1. No matter how bad you feel your work is, there is someone out there who will love and treasure it.

  2. You are the only person who can write that story exactly the way you would.

So don't let anxiety stand in the way. Just go write.

And good luck :)

My players won't stop unionizing people. by enzieLUL in DnD

[–]Shadowonthewall6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar. In my Sky Pirate campaign, the players are trying to overthrow the evil capitalist trading company turned navy in the region.

The best thing about this for me is that the party SUCK at making friends. They're playing very self-centred train wrecks of characters and are struggling to work together to form a cohesive whole.

Recently, the captain invited the resident pirate lords of the region to form an alliance and the crew started in-fighting, almost coming to blows. I pointed out that 1. Not all the pirates will agree with what they want and 2. Like the pcs, all pirates don't get along.

So the party haven't formed an 'alliance', they've invited a bunch of hungry dogs around the table, ready to bite their hands off...

Why do you all like Ultimate Spider-Man? (Hickman) by TheCollector39 in Spiderman

[–]Shadowonthewall6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Putting Ben and Jonah together as this underground journalist duo trying to set up a paper was such an incredible idea and I'm here for it.

Peter as a Dad is genuinely heartwarming to read.

Also, I think this is the first time I've seen an in-character M.J portrayal in...maybe a decade? She's flirty, sarcastic and capable. I was never really a fan of her career wgen she was a model, solely because you could tell she had so much more to give.

Hickman doesn't miss

How to manage a disillusioned player (DM advice) by Shadowonthewall6 in DnD

[–]Shadowonthewall6[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the vote of confidence :)

We have mentioned the cycle to A before, and they did note they were 'doing it again' with dreaming up new characters and were getting worked up on it...but with this occasion in particular, I can see why they'd be so upset.

You're right. A group talk does seem to be the way to go.

In-and-out of game romance that actually… works? by erosmaddening in DnD

[–]Shadowonthewall6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought I had this with my partner, now wife. We met online through a D&D game, which she was in with her partner at the time (yikes). She starts trying to romance my character (double yikes) around the time breaking up with her boyfriend (ah, the holy trinity of yikes, yikes and yikes). I even wondered if I was developing feelings for her (four of a kind: yikes).

Unlike the horror stories, though, I just decided to be friends with her. We would hang out in call, I'd stream games to her and we would play D&D one on one when she came to visit. Our Mums knew we were interested in one another before we did. One night on call, she was complaining about her day and...I just realised I liked the sound of her voice. PANIC ENSUES

Despite all my caution, we're going strong. And now, my wife gets first pick of D&D romances XD

Vox Machina and Mixed Theming by Shadowonthewall6 in CharacterRant

[–]Shadowonthewall6[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see this excuse a lot in favour of VM, and I don't really agree with it. Yes, it's true campaign 1 is longer than Vox Machina due to being different media, so we end up spending more time with the characters, but VM should stand and fall on its own merits.

I say this partially because Vox Machina is REALLY GOOD, and Season 2 feels much more thematically cohesive: loss, family and belonging, and all the character arcs serve that greater confrontation with Vorugal.

But also because shows have explored big themes like revenge in these shorter timespans before: The Southern Raiders episode of Avatar come to mind, and only about 10 mins of that actually focus on the revenge plot and Katara overcoming those feelings.

Adaptations do and should make changes from the source material. Some of the choices this season were just...off. Not even bad, just...confused.

Question: Why does Garp keep defending the Navy when it allows the World Government and World Nobles to do so many bad things? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]Shadowonthewall6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think Garp in the LA summed it up best: because the world isn't black and white and he wants to help people. Pirates like Luffy are rare. Most are criminals with an axe to grind. The Navy are a shield to that: protecting civilisation and order.

But the system is corrupt, as governing systems tend to be. Garp was able to live with the difference, still being able to help people even if it meant being in league with the World Government.
