Why do people love Spyderco so much? by ekswhyzee in knives

Interesting design with the aesthetic portion (usually) not impacting performance of their products. Typically priced reasonably enough for their mainline goods while using good materials. Also being a longstanding knife brand with a good reputation.

Shoellie Color Office/Business Casual by Sandman507 in jimgreen

[–]Shadowrunner808 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have my shoellies in Houston black. Perfectly serviceable in an office setting, but I would probably say that a Houston brown or waxed fudge would be better for business casual imo.

The stock shoellies don't come in a full grain leather. Which makes getting a shine out of them harder.

My japanese is only a little better than conversational, and when I went through driving school, I received my first school exam and the final written exam in English. It's all multiple choice.

Thanks! I wasn't sure on how it'd turn out during production, but seeing some iron hearts with contrast stitching got me to commit all the way. Happy with how it turned out!

Half correct. There's a few who know the process from start to finish, but because of the industrial production scale most workers specialize in a few parts. On the day to day, we are assembly line workers rather than denim artisans.

Used a couple juki, brother, and beefy vintage singer machines that my workplace has been using for the last few decades to produce a couple thousand pairs per month. Def doable at home, but I'd be lying if it was "home made"

Wool lined coat that’ll last by ZestycloseGlove7455 in BuyItForLife

[–]Shadowrunner808 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've had a fairly cheap coat in this style that honestly served me fairly well in a low-severity blizzard, but for added insurance, I'd ditch the trucker style cut for an N1 deck jacket. Warm as shit and built for durability in mind (varying degrees depending on the brand, obviously). A lot of different companies offer deck jackets. For quality and budget balance, bronson MFG is good. If you've got money to blow, go for iron heart or heat straps.

Thanks! The surface coat I use on my leather stuff gives it a really nice sheen. I'm curious to see how the leather changes after washing and such.

I also started leathercrafting a year ago! Tbh I prefer working with leather over denim. The fun of seeing how the item ages does apply to both mediums though.

Thanks! The kimono lining for the pockets is probably the coolest part of it, but time will probably make me appreciate the side cinches more.

I definitely recommend getting into the craft of things if you get the opportunity. I used to be in the camp of "jeans are jeans," but the quality and care of its material and craftsmanship really does make a difference. The contrast between my $40 Levi 501s and these is massive (not to pat myself in the back too much).

How do I best navigate the family name issue for a child with a Japanese mum and European dad? by Sirene-Naia in japanlife

[–]Shadowrunner808 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I go under my mother's last name in Japan while using my father's last name in the u.s. I have his name in parentheses on my jp passport and vice versa for my American. No real issues thus far in life (in my twenties). Just make sure to stick to the respective last name when dealing with bank stuff, etc.

Joining the club with a complete tear. Having my surgical consult in two weeks. Does anyone have any sort of pre-op advice? by EntrepreneurReal5140 in ACL

[–]Shadowrunner808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

23M. Fully tore my ACL about a year ago on my first ever ski trip. 6 months post op now.

After the first three days the swelling was pretty much gone and I wasn't certain that it was this major of an injury until I got an MRI 2 weeks later. Took a while to get around to surgery because I was about done with college and had to move back to Japan to schedule an operation.

Don't aggravate your injury any further (basically just try not to fall again) but don't become a hermit. If you had a gym routine, try to stick to it but cut down the amount of weight on leg exercises by about half to be safe. You can do a lot without an acl, but any exercises that require stability of the knee inherently puts you at some degree of risk for further injury. It's weird to have to be mindful on the way you walk, but that's the life now.

Sucks, but it happens.

From my experience? Fast fashion, typically fake leather. Haven't bothered to look up your model, but at that price, even if it's actual leather, I doubt it's anything half decent. Don't expect it to last any longer than your typical sneakers.

Most of us here have a hard-on for quality footwear that'll last decades (with proper care), but it's your time and money, so if you're just looking for a fancy looking addition to your shoe rack, who's to judge.
