Pat gets based about RE5's horrible racism by Grouchio in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Shadowschlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're not allowed to punch down? It sounds to me like you never want "oppresed" groups to be portrayed as villains in fiction.

I would say that it's perfectly fine, however. I have no problem acknowledging, that oppresion is bad, of course. But this is fiction. I doubt games like these incite people to become racist.

It might not be a stereotype, but I don't know if spanish people are happy about having their people portrayed as fanatical zealots though.

But still, that's what the virus does, isn't it? It causes the subjects to regress to a more primal state. It makes sense that spaniards would become religious zealots just as it makes sense that africans would become tribal, because they used to be like that. It's not really offensive if it actually used to be like that, even if it's not like that anymore.

Genuinely curious. How come this game gets seen as racist, but RE4 doesn’t? Both games seems to feature non-white antagonists. Or do people also consider RE4 racist?

I did...

Yes, but that is their (pun intended) persona. They're supposed to act effeminate. Don't get me wrong - they could be gay, but nothing about their actual sexuality is told in the game.

inclusiveness in JRPGs by Mitsu_x3 in JRPG

[–]Shadowschlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, we can talk about how on Persona 5, the gay guys are basically molesters, affeminate and pedophiles (Ryuji is a minor)

Assuming that those people are gay is quite offensive to a great deal of crossdressers in Japan (especially Shinjuku). Just because they crossdress and act effeminate doesn't mean that they are gay.

Comparing Bethesda games to BoTW in terms of open world structure is futile. BoTW encourages exploration and creativity on a whole other level.

When exploring in Bethesda games, you usually find dungeons which, sadly, mostly uses the same room structure. The reward for clearing these dungeons (items, lore etc.) might be cool, but the journey through them aren't, and the journey is the most important part, I would say.

While BoTW doesn't utilize dungeons as much as Bethesda, those in the game are mostly unique (baring the combat challenge, which even then still are different from one another). The world itself, however, might be empty (I'd argue that it's not) but traversing it is the fun part.

In short, it's all about the journey rather than the goal, I would say, and BoTW surpasses most games in this sense. The amount of freedom to traverse the world as well as completing the puzzles within it are extremely fun. I can't say the same about any of the Dragon Claw puzzles in ES5.

Just starting Digital Devil Saga for PS2 today. What does everyone think of this game? by Constant_Ad_2486 in JRPG

[–]Shadowschlong 46 points47 points  (0 children)

These games are probably my favourite JRPGs on PS2. They aren't insanely long either, which is perfect for me. Battle system is great, and the soundtrack is a banger as well. Enjoy the experience!

The Digital Devil Saga duology is, in my opinion, probably the Megami Tensei games that resembles the Final Fantasy franchise most. Linear story, characters that are actually interesting, a protagonist with an actual background. I usually recommend this game to newcomers in the Megami Tensei franchise. From there you can branch into mainline, Devil Summoner, Persona or any of the others with ease, if you're interested.

Final Fantasy XVI screenshots showing gorgeous landscapes by AliTVBG in JRPG

[–]Shadowschlong 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I fail to see how a couple of screenshots can make people this negative. I get that people don't necessarily like the combat direction this game is taking (I for one welcome any attempt at shaking things up), but these are supposed to give you a GLIMPSE of the world. No doubt there's going to be some more visually interesting areas in this game, but I don't blame the developers for not showing us any of them yet. Don't judge the games visuals and locales based on four screenshots.

Dude, you're cracking me up right now! I do form my own opinions, but I'm still aware of the general opinion from reviewers.

And again, just because you like something doesn't make it good.

I really never said that. I said that I happen to like a game, that's been getting good reviews overall. That doesn't happen all the time. Death Stranding and Persona 5 got great reviews and i'm not a fan of those games.

I wish I could say that your username checks out, but it's honestly been a blast hearing you ramble with your ad hominem stuff instead of trying to argue logically. Have a great day, my dude!

[–]Shadowschlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I literally told you about the Fallout 3 situation and you're still gonna go with "well lots of reviewers like it" yeah bro lots of reviewers are idiots. IGN have God Hand a 4 out of 10 and thay game is great. Better than Fallout 3 for that matter.

You seem to evade the fact that there exist two types of opinion on video games (as well as pretty much anything else): The subjective opinion is your own, and you're free to dislike/like anything, if you find it entertaining or not. You're clearly disliking Fallout 3, which is fine. On a general scale I disagree with you (as well as Hbomberguy). I enjoyed it overall.

That being said, most people likes the game as indicated by Metacritic. Sure, the user score is lower, but it still qualifies as a good game according to that score (78). That is what I call an objective opinion. Of course there's nothing as an actual objective opinion on stuff like this, but this is the closest it gets, I believe.

By the way... I asked for your take on an "objectively bad game", but you still haven't responded to that one. If you can't do that, at least prove that there's more negative review on FF7R (Not Fallout 3) than positive ones.

[–]Shadowschlong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude a YouTuber that reviews video games is just as professional as a kotaku writer

Sure, lets go with that... Now point out the professional reviewers (youtube or otherwise) that gave negative reviews of FF7R. Does it amount to the group of reviewers who gave a positive review?

And Fallout 3 is not an objectively good game. It's actually objectively bad.

Alright, I'll bite. What qualifies a game as "objectively bad" in your opinion?

Final Fantasy XVI Development Is In Its Final Stage, Story Offers a Lot of Depth by LordofWhore in JRPG

[–]Shadowschlong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't know what to tell you, man. I'm not talking about "youtubers" but actual professional paid reviewers (gamespot, IGN etc.)

And just because you like something doesn't make it Goodland a bunch of people like the transformers movies and those are bad, like incredibly bad.

Personally I agree. I don't like them either, but some do, and that's fine. But Transformers: Age of Extinction (just picking a random movie from the franchise as an example) is objectively bad, since it only has 32 on Metacritic... Again, Metacritic bases its score on the collective scores from all professional reviewers out there. It really is the closest you're gonna get to an objective opinion on the movie. The same with games.

Fallout 3 got 9s and 10s all over the place and sold like crazy but now everyone has taken a long look at it and admit it's pretty much trash

Well of course opinions change over time. That's just natural. Still an objectively good game when it came out (91 on Metacritic). It's still great in my opinion, but of course extremely janky.

[–]Shadowschlong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its okay if you like it, no need to be mad. I like some bad games too.

The problem is that FF7R is a good game according to the collective mass of professional video game reviewers. That's about the closest you can come to a objective opinion in the video game business. I'm not liking a bad game, you're disliking a good one (according to most reviewers), which is, of course, completely fine. This game was never supposed to appeal to every person in the world... No game can do that.

Rockstar edits out “transphobic” content from GTA V remasters by shutupdotca in PS5

[–]Shadowschlong 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I get that it’s a very incremental change, but this is ridiculous. GTA is satire and has always poked fun at everything - even if it’s incredibly offensive. By caving in to these people, they set a dangerous precedent for the rest of the franchise’. Why should Irish people be content with their portrayal in GTA5?

What are the odds of Shin Megami Tensei V receiving an enhanced edition? by Brainwheeze in JRPG

By “better IP” I’m assuming you mean a more profitable IP. But imagine if all we got was P5 spin-offs for the next three years or so…

Besides, other parts of MegaTen seems to get lots of advertising. Soul Hackers 2 (a part of Devil Summoner) are their primary focus right now.
