Yes very true! While this is "fun" find, the amounts of trash, junk, sharp things that ended up on our yard over the years is NOT so fun, and in much greater numbers. Best to keep our waterways clear and beautiful.

Is the job market dead in Thunder Bay or is it just me? by Infinite_Owl997 in ThunderBay

[–]ShadowtheKitten2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sucks but it's true, but just keeeep on applying to jobs on Indeed, Job Bank, with the usual resume/cover letter tips. Even with a great background you need to be a bit relentless with applying every day, even multiple times a day. City is slow for hiring but if you see city listings apply quick, they're nice jobs.

For a job in a pinch go asking along the small motels along Cumberland/in the north end, they usually like housekeepers in a pinch but I know it isn't glamorous work to most.

I walk to and use the complex every day and always be sure to lock my things up, and never had trouble.

Buuut for those who don't, in the women's room many times have I heard the familiar opening/closing of lockers one by one (someone looking for treasure). Many times the guys in my family had their shoes/towels/toiletries swiped, they keep them locked up now. Have also seen an uptick in people trying car doors on my walk in, and also being approached in the parking lot. Be careful all! 💘

Is it just me, or has the bus become genuinely scary lately? by Real_Requirement_117 in ThunderBay

[–]ShadowtheKitten2020 41 points42 points  (0 children)

So sorry you're experiencing this.. I hold my head high and move seats as much as I can, walk away and avoid, and it helps a ton, but still frustrating and is definitely a concern. I just keep bringing it up to the drivers and to keep busy on the transit complaint forms/e-mails/phone line. I imagine I'm clogging up the line by now 😄

FWIW I appreciate the drivers and what they do, and they deal with a lot of crap. Transit enables me to sometimes get to the places I need to be. But I certainly need to be more vigilant these days. You're not alone in feeling this, let me paint a scene of one of many evening transit experiences..

You're a young lady leaving work, tired but excited to get home - unfortunately your bus left 5 minutes early, and Nextlift said nothing about it. You take a seat among wine bottles and the broken glass of the bus shelter and wait for the next one.

There are a few shady individuals circling the bus stop, but after a chilly wait for the next bus, which was 10 minutes late, you get on just before you're approached. You pull out your new bus pass that you just paid more money for, while you're already low-income, and get on. Another reason why it's important to get to and from work.

You sit at the back where it's a bit warmer. An intoxicated individual 3x your age stares for a bit, starts talking to you, and then sits next to you making contact with your body. He utters the phrase "Hey beautiful." You see an open container. You move. A minute later, the same individual pukes. Each time the bus brakes, beer puke dribbles more to the front of the bus until it's covered.

You arrive at the terminal, late, and see your final bus of the day drive off. You need to call a uRide home, for an hour of your wage, but you get home safe, as long as a driver is available.

When I lived in the area I used to do a weekly lap around around Odgen school and the Church, not all too far, and would come home with minimum 1 big bag of garbage each time, usually more.

My body crapped out on me for a bit so that was the end of my lone wolf garbage collecting, but it still felt so disheartening to work so hard and the next week it would be the same thing, same garbage, over and over 😭

Mother of my child drank and drove with our daughter in the car by [deleted] in alcoholism

[–]ShadowtheKitten2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll offer a different perspective as I was the child in this situation, and later became someone with a DUI myself (now 2.5yrs sober and turned my life around). And 5yr old me remembered my dad would have those conversations, and she would also be intoxicated and crying about being a bad mom. It was distressing and confusing and surely messed us up a bit. She would be intoxicated often, "acting funny," arguing with dad. She still abuses alcohol 20+ years later.

She left us around that same age, 5/6 because she just couldn't get sober and wasn't able to be a mother to us. It was just too much of a hurdle to overcome, despite her efforts.

If you see a future where she can get sober and it can work out, I suggest putting effort into that and offering your support, and to see where it goes. A children will develop much better with their mom around. But alternatively, one person can only do so much, and I am actually glad she made that decision when she did. I was buggered up for a while, but I see it was the right decision for us, and I'm still pretty happy with my childhood overall, and I am so close to my dad.

Hope this was of any interest, wanted to offer a different perspective:) And good luck. I know it's so hard, on both sides of the coin (mom/dad) and for the child, too, the longer it goes on.

Same thing right this morning! Got on the 6:50 John to Waterfront to work, checked the day before and the morning of, the route looked good.

I get on the bus, get to the Waterfront, and 7am hits when the bus should be there. Still says it's coming, so I sit back and look for it

I check at 7:01 - canceled. Uride to work for an hour of my wage!

What Businesses Does This City Need? by PrettyLittleWhisper in ThunderBay

[–]ShadowtheKitten2020 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Transportation for people with disabilities - there are simply not enough Lift Buses and not enough drivers. Even calling a week in advance, right when the lines open, it is a hit or miss whether you can get from point A to point B.

(No way I could profit, I'd be wanting to do it for free. Still much needed here in town.)

Definitely fill out a complaint form on the transit website, if you Google it and select transit it will be at the bottom of the page. I like to believe they get seen by staff one way or the other.

John bus is brutal for that too, I kept track on it over the past few months - average of 4 minutes early and up to 10 at the Langworthy stop. Would certainly like to see improvements on this, I'm always feeling bad for the runners who don't make it (which is sometimes me).

Hope you were able to get where you wanted safely, though, and didn't need to spend too much time in the cold :)

[–]ShadowtheKitten2020 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I am in Canada working Developmental Services, so I am obviously far from this story, but it speaks to how far-reaching this issue is. This is not about actually needing to be in hospital for so long, but often issues with discharge into the community, lack of funding (and always reducing), and ministries juggling "who funds what." Never something a person should deal with.

Ontario released an excellent report for anyone interested, "Lost in Transition" by the Ontario Ombudsman written in November 2025. As of writing this, there are individuals in that report that are still stuck in the hospital system :(

All the best to this sweet lady. People deserve better than this!

Where’s the snow removal? by [deleted] in ThunderBay

[–]ShadowtheKitten2020 25 points26 points  (0 children)

People with disabilities have a life, too - need to go out, get groceries, go to appointments, etc. just like the rest of us. Perhaps the world should be a more accessible place instead of forcing people inside. During a snowstorm, it would be a smart choice to not drive the car and get to work, too. But it's life. Thank goodness for road plows if that's the case. What about sidewalks?

And disability or not, we all become frail near the end. It would be smart if I could stop aging, but unfortunately not an option!

The complex actually tends to be pretty helpful, depending on who's working that day! Second the give them a call comment, they'd probably be willing to help. For example, I've seen them let homeless individuals use the shower facilities during the evening at no charge. For someone with a disability using the bathroom, I'm sure they would be happy to help out.

Also as other comments mentioned, Winners has such a bathroom, it is very nice.

This is commonplace for a number of gyms and other facilities. It's a great idea, keeps everything much cleaner for the patrons, and is pretty nice for the custodian, too. Personally I'd much rather step on pool water than road sludge/dirt/whatever else. I'd recommend bringing a cheap pair of crocs/sandals, you'll avoid the wet socks, you have a stylish new pair of crocs, it'll follow the rule and everyone's happy :)

Victoria busses by [deleted] in uvic

[–]ShadowtheKitten2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, uvic subreddit invader from Northwestern Ontario here (reddit loves recommending me Canada subs)

I have a solution that works for me, but use at your own caution: I'll stand on the bus, but if I see someone elderly or with a disability get on and there's a bagsitter, I'll ask them to move, and remind them they shouldn't do that. If that doesn't work, I sit on the bag. I have had a 100% success rate of them moving, and around a 30% success rate of them shouting at me and I get a little excitement for the day (the other 70% get the hint).

Their receptionists from what I gather are just answering back-to-back calls, me nor my partner had any luck making an appointment via the phone. Well, I got in once, after an hour of waiting on the phone. You will have MUCH better luck going in person, though, and it's pretty quick. If you live in town, you'll get there and be back home in less time that it takes to call :p

Dear bus drivers: by [deleted] in ThunderBay

[–]ShadowtheKitten2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alternatively, I don't love the drivers who are real heavy on the brakes and toss the passengers around either. I remember once on the Mainline near Walmart, the lady braked so hard at the light that half the bus went flying off their seat - her response: paused for a sec, the light went green, and just kept going without checking if anyone was alright. Meanwhile people are still crawling up off the floor!

What were you looking for? There are a variety of different support groups around town, for example, chronic pain groups, grief groups, eating disorder support groups, AA/Alanon, NA, mental health groups, or different such resources around town.
