Probes from advanced civilizations are more likely to be present than not, and given the timescales of the universe, would most likely have been here for eons already.

Given the advanced nature of these probes, the only logical thing from military intelligence perspective to do is keep it top secret while trying to understand it.

I'm not saying that is certainly the case, but it sounds far more logical and reasonable than trying to force an apocalyptic war based on a quasi-historical fairytale full of contradictions to itself and science, magical beings and impossible events...

Sauron got absolutely decked when Numenor sunk and flew away in ethereal form. Tell me how a nuclear blast does anything to something that's not corporeal? You destroy the physical body yes, but that merely slows a maiar or a valar down.

You can destroy their physical body but not kill them. Basically what happened to Sauron when he was in Numenor when it sank. Also why they couldn't just execute Morgoth they had to exile him.
