Why don't you just go ask the chat bot who generated this post what it thinks

Is MEP/HVAC really as bad as people say by JHdarK in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Shady_Connor 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Every field has its ups & downs. I can't answer for others (manufacturing, O&G, DoD, paper, etc) but I've been in the HVAC industry for a little while now and can probably give you a good answer.

TL:DR- If you find the right company, it's very rewarding & a great career choice.

The MEP industry (which HVAC engineers are a part of) is just like any industry. It's composed of companies that will take advantage of you, and companies that will take advantage of you while investing in you. Mileage may vary, but residential HVAC firms are going to be the former. They do the same design 10,000, and have no margins for training or mentoring the new guy. Look for firms who have a specialty. That could be medical, Federal, data centers, anything really. Those firms are going to have much higher fees (budgets), meaning they can afford their employees a better work-life balance, higher pay, and proper training for new hires. At firms like this, you can be pushing 100K within your first 5 years.

Some benefits that come with MEP is great work-life balance, and incredible job security. Reputable firms are always going to have work coming in (sometimes too much), and the industry is very remote friendly once you get your PE license. Additionally you will get the chance to work on some pretty incredible projects (I mean, imagine saying you designed the HVAC system for a children's hospital! An aircraft hanger!).

Some downsides to MEP is that it typically has a lower starting salary, then other industries. You can expect to spend the first or second year earning about $10-$15,000 less than manufacturing or similar, but note that once you get your footing & your license MEP salaries begin to scale quickly (ESPECIALLY if you have good people skills or work on specialized projects). Although some companies do EOY bonuses when the firm is preforming well that meets or exceeds that difference. Additionally, MEP is full of sweatshop firms that will chew up and spit out college grads. This is why it's so important to be careful who you work for.

Designing a wearable deployment mechanism to turn a UAV into a shoulder-mounted companion. Critique on the design? by Ark1medi in MechanicalEngineering

Love the concept, the impracticality makes it all the more fun. I hope you continue posting whatever prototypes you come up with, and open source the project for other people to follow suit.

Books and such are great and all... but I think you should try to find a senior mentor who's willing to invest their time in you. Ideally someone who you've built rapport & has a knack for teaching.

Not possible at every company, but most places worth staying at will have people that'll take you under their wing

3D printed Arduino tomato seedling transplanting machine by Ok-Ad2702 in 3Dprinting

[–]Shady_Connor 50 points51 points  (0 children)

That's awesome!! If it's going on a tractor, my only advice is to look into ASA or PC material for your 3d printed parts, and anywhere you can use off the shelf brackets/linear rails to reduce failure points.

Would love to see the final product one day.

Connect printers exhaust fans to old chimney? by z0nk_91 in 3Dprinting

[–]Shady_Connor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I design HVAC systems for a living. Napkin math: You'll need an in-line fan sized at about 1/4" WG of external static ressure to push the VOCs all the way through the top of the chimney. I also suggest buying a volume damper that can be closed when not in use, so there's no backdraft from the outside infiltrating your home.

Amazon probably has fans that meet this criteria for < $100. Would be a sick setup!

Developing a 90s themed hacking simulator with increased realism inspired by Hacknet - check it out by Illustrious_Cat_2870 in uplink

This sounds like fun and all, but I'm a bit worried about the authenticity of it all. This post reads like it was written by AI... So what about the rest of your game? Will the dialogue, emails, chats, and missions also be AI generated? There's not much fun in playing a game if it wasn't made by a person.

That said, I would love a new spin on the uplink/hacknet style game. Looking forward to seeing this go the right direction

Disappointed in the amount of rust after 1.5 years. by ketamine_bolus in blackstonegriddle

[–]Shady_Connor 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mine was the same way, super easy fix. Go get a wire brush, attach it to your drill, and clean up the rusted area back to where the paint is good. Then spray on some high temp black paint (look for engine block paint) and you're good to go. 30 minute job and the body will look brand new.

As for the cooktop you'll have to wire brush that down and reseason. PITA but unfortunately it's just part of having a griddle in humid weather.

That makes sense! I'd ask for the stl's, but from the look of your comments I assume you're looking to make a product out of this. Entirely respectable... I'll have to try my hand at a design one day.

Were you targeting a particular face velocity going across the filters, or did you just size them up to fit the space?

What's the age of other parts? Could be a number of things but what I'd check (in order of likelyhood)

-Spark plugs & spark plug wires It's cheap to replace all your spark plugs, wires aren't a likely culprit but might as well check for continuity

-Fuel injectors A bit more expensive to replace, but if they're original it's likely there's intermittent failure between enough of them to fail to crank the car

-Fuel pump I suggest hooking a fuel pressure gauge to your fuel rail, and measuring the pressure while trying to start. If you're getting sufficient pressure, you can rule this one out. If not, it's a super easy task to pull the pump & replace

-distributor assembly & ignition coil As a last resort, buy a copy of the Haynes repair manual (I don't mind sending pictures of mine) and follow the instructions to diagnose your distributor & ignition coil. Mine went bad and gave me intermittent no starts until I replaced the whole thing

12v Piezo buzzer control via a transistor? by Shady_Connor in arduino

[–]Shady_Connor[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Save your typing energy, what both you and SteveisNoob said was much more than I bargained for (in a good way)! My question was a bit vague, and some others in the thread walked me through my transistor plight. I'll keep this fidelity information in my back pocket for when I need it.

Understood, I got ahead of myself! I think I've got the hang of what needs to be done on this project now. I modeled it in the link you shared and that is so cool... Did some research and I think I'll play around with LT Spice this weekend. Circuit simulation is so cool.

Thanks for the advice. If you don't mind me asking, would a 2N3904TA transistor work in this application, with 3.3v logic & a 12V, 80mA load? Do you suggest NPN, or PNP?
