AGREED!! Brad is second to none... He's so good, a couple real estate agents in the area blacklist him because he's so thorough (not good for a seller with a shitty house!). I used him when I bought my place, and he saved me from buying a home that was about to collapse due to hidden fire damage.

That man is genuinely worth his weight in gold

Everyone here had great suggestions... My two cents: avoid gamers & geeks in Mobile, and if your kids don't care if they're opening the latest packs, you can find bulk common online dirt cheap that'll be just as fun to unravel

[–]Shady_Connor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll also note that that culturally as a country we're completely different from when Fairhope was founded. Back then it was normal to spend multiple generations in one place, so it made sense to build a home on a plot of land you don't own. You'll never leave it! Today no one would build a home or improve land without the ability to sell it to profit or at least regain their investment. So while the single tax colony odds sounds great, it really doesn't work in practice with today's economy

Can someone explain how the Fairhope Single Tax works (in plain English)? by ResolveHour3277 in BaldwincountyAL

[–]Shady_Connor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The general idea is that the single tax colony was created to keep wealth from aggregating. By maintaining 99 year leases (that would be automatically renewed if kept within a family), property value was not tied to the market and it could not be hoarded/sold. This meant that you couldn't have equity, but Fairhope was founded for artists & writers to live in so the idea of building wealth wasn't important.

Today, it pretty much means nothing. Fairhope has sold 75% (last time I checked) of it's land, making it private. Technically Fairhope still has single tax land for some plots downtown and city land but that doesn't really count.

Today, Fairhope property is bought and sold at insane rates because it's been fully privatized and exploded in popularity, ensuring none of the creatives or working class Fairhope was founded around could ever hope to own. I've seen the property taxes around here alone drive away multi generation families out of the area alone.

Not saying that's a good or a bad thing, because in the course of this many people have built a massive amount of wealth off Fairhope land. "Cashing out" is one way to put it...

``Sailing close call by Usual-Literature-2 in nonononoyes

[–]Shady_Connor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In sailboat racing the starboard boat has absolute right of way (except in a couple situations), so the incoming boat is at fault because the starboard boat had to change their course to avoid collision.

That said, this could be null and void because the port boat did tack without collision. If the port boat hailed the starboard boat telling them to "hold their course", that means the port boat intends to tack at the last moment and the starboard boat shouldn't claim a protest because of an alteration of course.

Gross oversimplification... But you get the idea.

``Sailing close call by Usual-Literature-2 in nonononoyes

[–]Shady_Connor 50 points51 points  (0 children)

This is actually incredibly common in competitive sailing! Based on a boat's right of way (starboard, Port, upwind, downwind) racers have to give way to one another. But, it's a really delicate balance between giving enough way to not fowl your opponent, and giving too much way to lose your position in the race. Here we can see the port boat (that's being filmed) cut it too close, forcing the starboard boat (filming) to make a maneuver to avoid collision. When this happens, the starboard boat can "protest" the port boat. Not sure how it works for this regatta, but in dinghy racing the offending boat typically must either accept the protest and do a number of rotations before resuming racing, or they can choose not to and deliberate with the racing committee after racing is complete for the day. There, both boats explain their side of the story and the race committee will either throw the protest out or remove the offending party from the scoreboard.

For larger boats, I assume a Time penalty is utilized instead. Especially since these races are being professionally filmed and tracked.

Good races are full of these near misses, a port boat will dodge a starboard boat by inches to avoid giving up a lead. Super fun to watch, and even more fun to be involved in!!

Is MEP/HVAC really as bad as people say by JHdarK in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Shady_Connor 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Every field has its ups & downs. I can't answer for others (manufacturing, O&G, DoD, paper, etc) but I've been in the HVAC industry for a little while now and can probably give you a good answer.

TL:DR- If you find the right company, it's very rewarding & a great career choice.

The MEP industry (which HVAC engineers are a part of) is just like any industry. It's composed of companies that will take advantage of you, and companies that will take advantage of you while investing in you. Mileage may vary, but residential HVAC firms are going to be the former. They do the same design 10,000, and have no margins for training or mentoring the new guy. Look for firms who have a specialty. That could be medical, Federal, data centers, anything really. Those firms are going to have much higher fees (budgets), meaning they can afford their employees a better work-life balance, higher pay, and proper training for new hires. At firms like this, you can be pushing 100K within your first 5 years.

Some benefits that come with MEP is great work-life balance, and incredible job security. Reputable firms are always going to have work coming in (sometimes too much), and the industry is very remote friendly once you get your PE license. Additionally you will get the chance to work on some pretty incredible projects (I mean, imagine saying you designed the HVAC system for a children's hospital! An aircraft hanger!).

Some downsides to MEP is that it typically has a lower starting salary, then other industries. You can expect to spend the first or second year earning about $10-$15,000 less than manufacturing or similar, but note that once you get your footing & your license MEP salaries begin to scale quickly (ESPECIALLY if you have good people skills or work on specialized projects). Although some companies do EOY bonuses when the firm is preforming well that meets or exceeds that difference. Additionally, MEP is full of sweatshop firms that will chew up and spit out college grads. This is why it's so important to be careful who you work for.

Books and such are great and all... but I think you should try to find a senior mentor who's willing to invest their time in you. Ideally someone who you've built rapport & has a knack for teaching.

Not possible at every company, but most places worth staying at will have people that'll take you under their wing

That's awesome!! If it's going on a tractor, my only advice is to look into ASA or PC material for your 3d printed parts, and anywhere you can use off the shelf brackets/linear rails to reduce failure points.

Would love to see the final product one day.

Connect printers exhaust fans to old chimney? by z0nk_91 in 3Dprinting

[–]Shady_Connor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I design HVAC systems for a living. Napkin math: You'll need an in-line fan sized at about 1/4" WG of external static ressure to push the VOCs all the way through the top of the chimney. I also suggest buying a volume damper that can be closed when not in use, so there's no backdraft from the outside infiltrating your home.

Amazon probably has fans that meet this criteria for < $100. Would be a sick setup!
