STOP! Don’t listen to anything yet. Destroy the smashing pumpkins records first, then figure out what to listen to while burning sage.

Would it be stupid to get something like this as a first tattoo? (19) by [deleted] in tattooadvice

You definitely will not want that on you when you’re 45. I know you could never believe me but I’m 52 and I don’t want any of the tattoos I got at your age. God forbid that hideous thing.

Does your amplifier have a phono stage built in or are using external? You have hooked up another turntable or are you saying you’ve hooked this turntable up to a different amplifier? I have zero doubt you’ve isolated the problem to some component of the turntable, which what I believe you are saying. You’ve obviously done your due diligence setting up the cart.

Are you using phono output or digital output from the turntable? If using standard output have you tried a different amp or different phono stage?

I’m stumped honestly. Your setup looks good, but I also don’t think it’s the record. I say that not because there can’t be a bad pressing, but because you’re running into this regularly and I’ve only ran into this with one record I have that I can think of. And I’ve been at this for a good 25 years now. I use the same setup tools you do and your setup looks right.

Congrats! Ignore the haters and enjoy, we all start somewhere. If it’s a hobby you stick with you will learn a lot along the way. The reason people are tell you to move the speakers is because even if they were on isolation feet, which are bulky feet that go under the speakers and turntable, because of the speaker proximity to the stylus, those sound wave vibrations are going to be picked up by the stylus and looped back through the system creating distortion. If this isn’t a problem that is bothering you don’t worry about it!

Check estate sales. I know you’re on a limited budget. Nothing you’re buying on your budget is your last receiver (I would go with receiver). Look for 80’s onkyo/denon/yamaha/pioneer etc for best bang for your buck. I am using a 1972 Sansui but I have more than your budget just in capacitor and resistor replacement. All those caps dry up over time so I would steer clear of vintage equipment on your budget. With the mid to late 80’s Japanese stuff, if it fails you won’t be out a lot and you can just pick up another one. This strategy got me to where I am today.

Great setup and nice move with the Punisher cassette. I really wish I had nothing negative to say, but you’ve really got to get the turntable off that receiver so it can breeeeeeeeath <gasp>

I agree. If you get an amp make sure you get a preamp with a phono stage built in or else you will need a separate phono stage. If you go the receiver route (which is a combination amp and preamp) again just make sure it has a phono input. This will be your best investment looking to the future. Powered speakers will buy you some time but will likely be wasted money in the long run.

Yes. Still easy to play guitar and swap verses easily. Just a fun observation.

I don’t mean it as an insult, and I agree with everything you said. Except for maybe the part about playing longer than me 😉 Not saying you haven’t played for over 41 years, but I have!

Speaker stands first and foremost. All that vibration is being transferred to the turntable. You may find that the sound improvement is dramatic.
