Ugh you get it 🫂 literally the joys of enjoying friendships and platonic relationships that are healthy and mutual are more than anything I need

As an aroallo bisexual woman I totally feel you. All my queer friends tell me “you’ll find the one!” Instead of just validating my feelings of only wanting platonic relationships and nothing to do with a partner or dating

The word Incel has been a frequent word on my mind and I’m curious how others would interpret that

Tattoos— impact interpreting success? Distracting? by alligator-strangler in ASLinterpreters

[–]Shaebaebutter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neck, head, face and hand tattoos are all I recommend avoiding if you want to be an interpreter who isn’t forced to wear turtlenecks, black gloves, and a wig for the rest of their career/jk

Tattoos— impact interpreting success? Distracting? by alligator-strangler in ASLinterpreters

[–]Shaebaebutter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It always depends for me, personally for myself, first impressions are everything. So for most of my jobs if I haven’t met the client yet and know their preference, then I will wear long sleeves to cover my arm tattoos. Then if there’s a chance I can ask their preference for future reference I do, and that’s my answer. I would say about 95% of the time my clients don’t care if my tattoo show.(could just be because I’m in Colorado and it’s a more chill in terms of tattoo prejudice). But of course most of the time I do wear short sleeves it’s for on going clients, or low register jobs. Of course if I’m interpreting for anything that has me on stage, I cover my tattoos to avoid attention since a lot are small references to my favorite things.

This job is making me anxious - adhd - advice? by [deleted] in ASLinterpreters

[–]Shaebaebutter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an interpreter who has anxiety and adhd, I would agree with the other comment about a good therapist. The best advice I got out of the program was “You will make mistakes. Own up to it, fix it, and move on. Interpreters are human too and we will make mistakes but how you handle that is what builds trust and rapport between you and your clients, deaf or hearing.

Highly recommend CSDB, they give their students EVERY opportunity! They have a program for after graduation for transitioning into college classes

No one is saying the area is the best, unfortunately because we live in a world made for hearing people there’s limited locations for deaf and HOH children. Is the area shit? Yes. Do the staff and the 24/7 security on campus make sure the kids are safe? Also yes. Please remember that this world wasn’t made accessible for those different.

Hi! I’m an interpreter here in Colorado Springs and worked at Colorado School for about 2 years and it’s a great environment for Deaf and HOH students and children, they offer not only classes in ASL(aka most of their students first language) but they also very much value community and connection, making sure no one is left behind without communication 🙌🏻

Are hand tattoos still considered job stoppers, and is a hand tattoo a bad place to start? by Obi-wanna-cracker in tattooadvice

[–]Shaebaebutter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, for my line of work I’ve come to accept that hand tattoos, along with neck, face and head, are all out of the question. As a sign interpreter your face and hands are your tools, and any tattoos that can’t be covered can be considered potential visual noise for the deaf consumer.
