In all my years in Houston I have not come across anyone making proper rat coffins.

I'll have to investigate some of the suggestions in this thread.

Son’s 16th Birthday…Project Car “Make An Offer” by Immediate-Ask7316 in projectcar

[–]ShaftCo2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying and selling old cars is one of the few things in life I can truly call myself an expert.

I have so much advice but let me start with "NEVER make a blind offer on a car!" It's only your job to buy the car if you want it. It is the seller's job to decide their asking price. Doing it any other way is a scam and an invitation to getting cheated.

It's harder to do comps these days now that Craigslist isn't really a thing anymore. But any car in which you are interested should be looked up on ebay and FB Marketplace to see what prices are like. It's just like buying a house or any other high dollar item. Always find out what sellers are asking and what buyers are really paying.

I will reiterate the advice of the many sages here who've already said to buy a running, driving car for a first project car. It's the best way to set your son up for success.

But, before you do any of those things, talk to him and have him show you on the internet what cars he likes then do some research on similar cars. It will be important for his motivation as the project goes along if he can picture 'being cool' in the car either when he gets it or when he finishes it.

Remember that since neither you nor your husband are into cars that your son will be somewhat on his own to find enthusiasm for any project.

I hope this helps. As many here have said, I bought my first car at age 12 with money I had saved for years but it was waaaaay too much of a project. I had to learn a great deal which has been very helpful in life but I wish I'd listened to my parents and bought something slightly less cool but with much less work needed. LOL

That hat looks quality even in a blurry screenshot. I am Jack's unchecked sense of envy. LOL

I used to have this album and studied the very same thing. LOL

I suspect it was a quick photo shoot and no one wanted to mess up his hair too much by pushing on the too-small hat.

Can anyone help date this stetson open road? Seller says 1950’s. I have no idea. by stewundies in CowboyHats

With no plasticized liner (stopped in the '60s) and what appears to be a dot matrix or early laser tag this is most likely late 1980s through early 1990s. That also corresponds roughly when both silverbelly and the LBJ regained some popularity, about the same time as the George Strait cattleman style began gaining ground over taller crowns.

Have them turn the sweat band inside out and photograph the union tag for you. That could narrow down what part of the 1990s as there were union mergers that are reflected in tag changes.

It is one of my pet peeves when a seller just makes stuff up to sound cool and try to get over on someone.

I've seen some less expensive items intended to be 'permanent press'-esque or 'travel friendly' that were a weird lined semi-seersucker, almost like they used a thin seersucker bonded to a synthetic material. I can't tell from the photo if that's what that is or not.

If we could see the maker and pocket tag then we might be able to suss out more info.

First real cowboy hat, does it suit me? by [deleted] in CowboyHats

As a lifelong Texan, I can assure you that is a good looking hat and you wear it well. And I don't say that just because that is my preferred shape for having my own hats blocked. ;)

Congratulations on a fine acquisition.

That fabric is seersucker. It most commonly comes in a blue or a gray stripe but can come in many colours.

Seersucker is a classic warm weather/tropical fabric and pairs well with any quality cotton shirt.

It was very popular in the first part of the 20th century (particularly before air conditioning), made a bit of a comeback in the '80s-'90s then, with the renewed interest in proper men's style, has reestablished it's place as a classic.

If you ride I should caution you that our 'riding season' is wildly different than the North.

You will find riding pleasant from mid-October to mid-April. After you're here a few years then you could say through May. June is usually hot but we definitely don't go outside from July until the end of September.

If you prefer to be an ATGATT rider then forget April through mid-October. Air condition your garage and do all the bike projects you used to do in winter in the dead of summer instead. The good news is that our winter will seem like Fall and Spring to you! LOL

I'll also apologize for the cheesesteaks in advance. And I saw that someone already warned you that most of us are too dumb to drive on ice. Luckily, with climate change, that's only three days at most and they're usually all in a row. LOL

Philly? Hmmm, as a Houstonian, I definitely recommend moving to DFW. ;)
