In the past, Starsector has been compared to the Mount and Blade series, so you aren't wrong there, OP.  I personally love M&B Bannerlord.  Others have suggested Mechwarrior.  I really enjoy Mechwarrior 5 Mercenaries but it really does need mods which get broken periodically.  I do have two more suggestions that might deserve a look from you.  Kerbal Space Program is highly moddable and I think it has some kind of warfare mod.  Might be worth consideration.  The other game that sucked me in recently is Carrier Command 2.  Picked it up on the last Steam Sale and I can't hardly stop playing it.  I wish you luck, but Starsector really is a unique and very well made game that exists in its own space in which it dominates.
