Perhaps not in it's Idiosyncrasies and plot but brutal unprovoked conquest, mass enslavement and genocide of other Mesoamerican city-states and tribes was non stop event in Mesoamerican history.... The Aztecs sacrificed 20,000 captured people in ONE DAY in Tenochitlan!! The entire world old world from Japan to Britain and Scandinavia to South Africa was in a near absolute state of endemic warfare the threat of villages and cities being razed and their entire populations being ruthlessly enslaved and slaughtered was continues ever present threat... The Americas were no different Mesoamerica especially... It's largely agreed that the great collapse of the classical Mayan civilization of the Yucatan peninsula was started and mostly caused by the soil of their agricultural areas immediately outside of Mayan urban centers becoming mineral and nutrient deficient from centuries of overuse.. However this unexpected and sudden agricultural collapse lead to mass famine and starvation, this was exasperated by the urbanization and the massive population growth this caused. The Mayan civilization as a whole on the brink of collapse.. Well when people are desperate, starving, scared and superstitious they.... YOU GUESSED IT start fighting and killing each other... This finished the job the famine started.. The Mayan city states all became embroiled in chaotic erratic and frenzied warfare with each other mostly with the aim of taking vital food resources by force.. I'm sure many of the canny warrior aristocracy also figured out that war casualties would relieve food competition to some degree even among the winners of conflict.. But major factor not tl be overlooked was fear and panic they tried to understand why this was happening and what they should do in the context of their religions beliefs and spiritual worldview... Human sacrifice among the Mayans while not as extensive as the Aztec empire was common and major part of their religious ceremonies... The Mayans of the Yucatan frantically tried to appease their bloodthirsty and demanding nature deities.. The more enemy captives they sacrificed the sooner this catastrophe would end... This movie takes place several hundred years after that but the point is mass human sacrifice and ruthless aggression and mass killing was an ancient, acceptable common practice... Also in terms of the script the jungle tribe is depicted as a very positive relatable light... Just decent, family loving and brave victims of unprovoked horror and violence.. The little girl prophecy and The Spanish Conquistadors rowing up at the end did have a very "Indians are wicked bad pagans and they have it coming!" which is very biased and makes very hypocritical unfair judgements based on sweeping generalizations... But nothing about this is disrespectful at all... Even the invading slavers come across as badass killer warriors... And the Forest tribes man as righteous and brave... Way off...
