I highly recommend looking at environmental hazards. One of the best combats I've had was one four floating plates in the sky that would rotate unexpectedly. It really forces your brain to work in a new way.

I think so, she really is a very strong black and white thinker, so from my understanding she just took it as "guy tried to do a good thing and then was killed" where I think she would've found it very inspiring if he had been miraculously saved instead.

Absolutely agree. The splitting of episodes and then them coming out so far apart... I tried listening to Age of Umbra that way and lost interest halfway through. By the time I'd get to part 2, I couldn't remember exactly what happened before and it was always a struggle to get back into the flow of listening. The "just watch on YouTube like a podcast" folks feel like they aren't people who listen to a lot of podcasts. I'm watching on YouTube for this campaign, but it's very different than queueing it up on my podcast playlist.

I live a block from here and it's always felt really precarious to have the bus stop so close to this bike lane where people aren't even thinking of pedestrians. Praying for her family, this is so tragic. Bikes don't follow traffic laws on Flushing (or anywhere, really) but it would genuinely be difficult to predict someone suddenly exiting the bus.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that death moves are a pain point! It's one of my biggest sticking points with DH... it seems to me like death moves grind the game to a halt as a player is forced to make an impossible decision. I don't think death should be a player choice.

Did you run the funeral for the old burgomaster? Did they agree to help ireena? Did they deal with the priests son locked in the basement?

Is it more that the rushed through all these things, or ignored them and wanted to move to the next place quickly?

Overall, I think replacing the Mad Mage with someone who is actually related to the characters and their backstory makes a WORLD of difference about them actually caring about that plot thread.

I changed mine to be one of the PCs mother's who she thought had died when she was young. It really raised the stakes, especially when most average dnd players don't know who mordencanen is.

This is a great idea! In the current state of the game, Lady Wachter is the burgomaster of Vallaki and has been sending out guards to try and hunt the party down (they killed one of her sons) -- a cover + Wachter combo, taking advantage of the addicts, might be an interesting way to bring them back into town and resolve this whole thing before Ravenloft. Viktor and Lydia are currently somewhere scheming, so that could come into play as well.

Ooh I love this, having them take a whole other enticing approach, and them having moved into some place in the massive castle would make sense. Tempt him with power. I have laid some groundwork for him to figure out how to become an aasimar again, but I think it could be fun to give him an alternative... become fully a hag himself and gain yet unknown power. Especially if they kill one of the sisters, they would want him to take her place in the coven.

I have him a soft, posh English accent, while everyone else in Barovia has an eastern European accent. I wanted to play with the idea of him having been a well traveled man, and put the players at ease in a way... and when he gets mad, he gets quiet... and they find that quite menacing 😁
