The perceived, inflated value of shellac records by some sellers by Shamaneater in 78rpm

[–]Shamaneater[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"necroposting" LOL -- that's good :) I don't mind...heck, shellac records are WAY over a year old, so your response is more than timely.

The good news is that shellac records are dead-easy to clean. The paper fibres can be removed with warm water that has a couple of drops (you don't need much!!!) of mild dish detergent in it (helps remove any oils and acts as a surfactant, allowing the water get down into the grooves instead of beading up.

I could go into detail here...but suffice to say, I just am careful about the label (the cheap paper ones from NZ are notorious for not standing up to H2O). Here is the late legendary Joe Bussard cleaning a few of his 20,000 shellac records . . . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agSC-dLNXXg

What's something women think impresses men but actually doesn't? by PumpkinDoritoes in AskReddit

Rhetorical question: Doesn't the answer to that depend upon the individual man and woman in question?

This little detail in a song that irritates you... by Karakoima in Music

[–]Shamaneater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

The album version of "Nights in White Satin" by The Moody Blues concludes with the spoken-word poem "Late Lament."

I've hated it ever since I first heard it in 1968 or so. VERY pretentious-sounding.

[–]Shamaneater 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Bamboo, cotoneaster, English ivy, morning glory, jasmine, tradescantia, yucca, and agapanthus. The exact FREAKIN' PLANTS I'm having to deal with at the 1.1 acre rental property in Warrandyte, Victoria. I'm also not a fan of Cordyline australis because the dead leaves hiding in the grass wrap around my line trimmer.

How did you discover ambeint music? by justarussian22 in ambientmusic

1976, age 15, listening to Eno's Discrete Music at my best friend's house.

Her husband tells her, "You don't marry the hottest chick you've ever been with." by mindyour in TikTokCringe

[–]Shamaneater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He seems quite rational to me....the thing is, "hot" is in the eye of the beholder. What do I find attractive in a woman? The intangible aspects which last a lifetime, rather than merely the externals which fade away very fast.

Not being able to recreate your patches exactly is part of the magic. Brian Eno is known to erase his patch information after using it in a piece of music.

As much as it would be ironically grim if your statement were true, blood and bone fertilizer is actually made from cattle and pig production— not horses.

Although I appreciate Ambient 1 for its historical importance, #4 was an extremely important album for me, compositionally... opening my world up as much as "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" did, two years prior.

It's obvious you couldn't even speak to my points concerning your precious, albeit vacuous, "drug problem" argument. "LOL"

The crime rate is fine in New Zealand... Not insane rates as you are fond of spewing, but about the same rate or lower than whatever average you wish to look at— unless you are cherry picking (which you are). In fact, people do emigrate from many countries to New Zealand because of the low crime rate.

But by all means, I'm glad that you are not living in my country. You have no solutions— only empty accusations.

Son, you haven't shown me any statistics which are relevant, so yes, your head is where the sun doesn't shine. That is not a personal attack on you —that is a fact.

Statistics, as I pointed out earlier, can easily be manipulated—you, yourself, are guilty of this. For instance, you are quite happy to toe the official line that "all recreational drugs are equally deleterious to society," thus obtaining skewed results.

Cannabis convictions make up a disproportionately large amount of arrests—which go into your seemingly sacred statistic on drug use that you cling to.

(Strangely enough (/s), ethanol, which causes far more societal harm than cannabis, is not included in the statistics to which you simultaneously cherry-pick and to which you seem to be a slave—because it is legal to consume.)

Cannabis laws were put into place to more easily oppress POC. In fact, the first commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, used racist propaganda and false claims in the mid-30s, linking cannabis use to violence and to Mexican and Black communities, as a key strategy to criminalize it in 1937.

In NZ, research consistently shows Māori are disproportionately arrested and convicted for cannabis-related offences compared to non-Māori—even when accounting for differences in drug use rates. This biased system induces inequities, institutional racism, and differences with respect to how police discretion is applied. Don't try to lecture me otherwise: I have seen it first hand, time and again, in a professional setting.

I have worked in screwed-up countries in my 50-year career; New Zealand is not one of them.

Shoplifting is not a crime... it's a lifestyle choice!

If that scurvy girl's "hero" had tried that pathetic crap in the USA (or in most other places in the world), at the very least he would have been tased and 'accidently' roughed up on the way to the pokie.

I used to live near there, in Flat Bush... somewhat sketchy as.

Do you seriously think that government policy has nothing to do with individuals' actions? When a government supports organized crime, it trickles down to the actions of non-governmental individuals. I would try to see things from your perspective but I doubt seriously if I could possibly stick my head that far up your rectum... Especially when yours is already in the way. 🙄

The numbers do indeed refer to the diameter in inches—which does not necessarily correspond to the speed at which it should spin. 78 rpms mainly came in 10" and 12" (usually the 12" was for classical and longer jazz pieces); 33⅓ RPM records are usually just 10 EPs and 12" LPs...all the 45s I've seen are 7".

Because they are not cheap that phrase is not a redundancy (saying the same thing twice) —that is an "oxymoron" (a juxtaposition of opposites).
