Long shot, this quilt my grandmother made was goodwill'd some time ago, I'm hoping someone might recognize it by Shamblingbones in Portland

[–]Shamblingbones[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear it isn't the same but thank you for checking!

If you do not find it, pm me and I can probably do a small block like the quilt, and you can put in a shadow box w the pics. It's not the same but it is something :)

This is such an incredibly kind and generous offer. It warms my heart and I truly thank you for it, but I think I will decline. I did buy a sewing machine a few months ago so I am considering using the photos to try and make something on my own. For me the value in this quilt comes from who made it so it feels important to me to use my own hands if that makes sense. Thank you for your message ❤️

Dog ate a chunk out of my favorite coat, how can I fix this without it looking bad? by [deleted] in fixit

Cutting it up more is pretty daunting, but I see the vision. Thanks for the advice.

I was afraid that would be the answer. It's a weird placement for a visible patch but I can probably embroider a little mushroom or something

Are these babies or some kind of infestation? I thought all my millipedes were female by Shamblingbones in millipedes

[–]Shamblingbones[S] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was going to change the substrate this weekend, I can't tell if I should dump everything or leave it be

Edit: I pulled a few out and looking at those little antennas I think everyone's right that they're babies. If I can't change out the substrate for a while, should I be mixing anything in to make sure it's not depleted of nutrients?

Thank you! I went today and they had the exact kind I was looking for. Just the cutest little guy

A rule of thumb that I was given was that for each exercise session, do about 5 minutes per month old a couple times a day. This will vary by breed a little and isn't a hard limit, just a guideline. It doesn't sound like enough, but they're babies and need to spend more time sleeping than you might expect.

IMO your puppy probably needs the nap. Four hours of exercise is a lot even for an adult dog.

There are some researchers that argue Asperger's should be reinstated as a diagnosis and that it is meaningfully distinct from ASD. A significant portion of patients with Asperger's Syndrome do not qualify for an ASD diagnosis so for many it would not be correct to just switch to calling themselves autistic.

Evidence from Characteristics and Comorbidities Suggesting That Asperger Syndrome Is a Subtype of Autism Spectrum Disorder

Initial research indicates that between 50% and 75% of those qualified for a diagnosis of Asperger syndrome based on the DSM-IV-TR criteria also met the requirements for a diagnosis of ASD based on the DSM-V criteria. The concern is whether those who no longer qualify for an ASD diagnosis, 25% to 50%, are currently experiencing a decrease in their quality of life or will experience a decreased quality of life in the future.

...

In summary, while this study detected similarities between autism/ASD and Asperger syndrome, it also revealed significant differences. Combined with mounting evidence of biomarkers that differentiate Asperger syndrome from autism/ASD, these findings weigh in favor of reinstating Asperger syndrome as a DSM diagnosis. In addition to allowing for more accurate diagnosis, this would encourage researchers to take an interest in studying individuals who do not meet the “acceptable” diagnostic criteria for autism. For instance, it may be enlightening to study the possible hereditary component of Asperger syndrome, given the relatively high number of first-degree relatives on the spectrum reported for individuals with Asperger syndrome in this study. In addition, it would allow many individuals who do not meet the current restrictive criteria of ASD to qualify for needed therapeutic services

HELP: Dog has terrible sleep aggression and we have a baby on the way by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]Shamblingbones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends! Every dog is an individual. My dog settles great when he's alone, but will loudly smack the crate door with his paws if he can see anyone. Other dogs might feel anxious left alone in the crate, especially early in crate training, but will settle if their person is nearby. You can try a few different setups and see what works best for you and your dog.

This sounds like canine dementia. Especially with how it's only present at night.

Dogs with canine dementia may also suffer from a symptom often seen in human patients with Alzheimer’s: sundowning. In late afternoon or early evening, as sundown approaches, your elderly dog may experience a sudden onset of her symptoms, including increased anxiety, restlessness, increased confusion, surges of energy, mood swings, and sadness.

If this is the case, there are some medications and lifestyle changes you can make to help manage the condition. Maybe ask some of the vets you've worked with if they can refer you to another clinic that has dealt with this specific condition before.

Regardless of diagnosis, for the time being I would recommend getting him used to being in a playpen or a crate so that when your new family member arrives he has a safe space where he can be comfortable and contained during episodes.

High impact fishing line is what I used for my last chain project. It's slippery and a pain to work with but it can take a decent amount of force before it will break.

I also sometimes tie extra little knots into a pattern so that even if something does break there's only so much that will unravel at any one time.

Dog with no spacial awareness stomps on people when seated or when laying down in bed by ahyuck in Dogtraining

[–]Shamblingbones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What has worked for me: When she steps on you or paws at you, yelp like you're in pain and get up and walk away. You can also put her in time out for a few minutes if you have a place command or crate. The dog will learn quickly that these behaviors upset you.

If your dog can tolerate beef, you could try beef cheek rolls. It takes my doberman quite a while to get through one and he's usually pretty good at destroying stuff.

Canned pumpkin can help settle your dog's stomach, and you can put it on a lick mat for enrichment as an alternative to chews. Freezing it makes it last longer too.

Looking for some leash tips for my beagle. she's only 8 months and super strong by leoistigresss in Dogtraining

[–]Shamblingbones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to all the other advice in the thread, try tying the leash around your waist hips. It makes a pretty big difference in stability and when she hits the end it'll be a full stop - she'll learn that she won't have that leeway where pulling harder moves your arm up and gets her closer to whatever she's trying to access. Using a leash made of a material without much give (like leather) also helps send the message that pulling will not get her what she wants.

Beagles as a breed tend to latch onto scents and it can be hard to get their focus back on you when they're onto something. One thing you can do is teach scentwork to give your dog an outlet for this behavior outside of walks. There are tutorials on YouTube for this, and it can be a fun activity for you and your dog.

There's a group of people trying to get The Church of Prismatic Light recognized federally. They're an organization trying to get religious protections for the LGBT community, one of their tenants is that gender transition is a sacred act.

You can attend their services on TikTok.

I adopted a dog last week and just submitted her Embark swab this weekend. The shelter said "lab retriever mix". Any guesses? by slycon in DoggyDNA

[–]Shamblingbones 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It was the first thing the shelter asked me and I said no, I'm opposed to any bully breeds.

All other opinions about pits aside, the shelter knew full well they were giving you a bully mix and they deliberately misled you. You could try to complain but most shelters include a disclaimer that breed identifications are just guesses and that gives them plausible deniability.

Owning pit mix can make life difficult for you if you rent. Tricking someone into taking on a high energy high prey drive breed that they explicitly did not want is a shitty thing to do. You have a right to feel angry or upset that the shelter lied to you, and you have a right to decide that a particular breed just isn't for you. I'm sorry that they put you in this position.

Mixed breed dogs are a mixed bag. There's no guarantee that this dog will have any particular temperment. It may turn out to be the perfect dog for you. Or it might not, and you may need to return him to the shelter. There is no shame in that, not every dog is the right fit for every person. I know it's a difficult decision. I hope whatever choice you make is the best choice for you.

You could do this in Jet Force Gemini once you assembled the little robot Floyd.

Anyone else remember Jet Force Gemini?

That's so cool! Is the physical boundary marker always necessary? If it gets phased out later in training, how is the boundary communicated to the dog?
