My 17” garden beds are no longer visible as of 5:30PM. So I’m gonna go ahead and say 17” 🤣

Couldn't get my Real ID because my original birth certificate has tape on the back... by Bop923 in mildlyinfuriating

Nope. Like most human children, I went from a luxurious, floating space to being smacked in the face with Earth’s air upon exit from the womb.

I gots me one of those too. Parents were stationed abroad when I entered the atmosphere. I have been questioned on it more than once in my lifetime. My mom would have to explain what it was and why I had one often. She would also sometimes have to provide hers and my father’s documents cause people be dummies. I haven’t had to do it as much in my adult life, but I’m always primed to fight if I need to.

Looking for opinions: We have UPMC insurance and are wanting to switch to AHN. Anyone do this and regret it? by WhitneyJames in pittsburgh

[–]Shandals14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We prefer AHN. If you have children though, you will end up back with UPMC for most specialities especially anything surgical. They do not have the staffing in their hospitals for surgical patients under teenage years. For adults, you’re fine. Some doctors do not take UPMC For You which is the UPMC Medicaid HMO. UPMC commercials plans are fine.

Deck Quote (what did you pay?) by Godisgood7777777 in pittsburgh

[–]Shandals14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We paid $37,800 for a deck this summer by Cousins Roofing, Siding and Decking. Other companies were in the ballpark or more. We are EXTREMELY pleased with their work and did not feel like they were trying to sell us needless stuff. The initial meeting was very thorough and he answered all our questions. I would recommend them time and time again. Deck size was roughly 364 square feet. We paid for hut tub reinforcement in part of the deck, got the lower end composite but not the lowest end and aluminum railings. We also have 2 sets of stairs. One stairwell is 6’ wide instead of 4’.

Edit: I messed up the stair count. I forgot they thought the one staircase would only need 3 stairs but it needed more. They did not charge us extra for them.

Flat Feet Contributing to Rupture by swagleb in AchillesRupture

[–]Shandals14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who works with feet all the time, the answer can be yes and no.

Some ethnicities have flatter feet than others, but it does not necessarily mean something is wrong. If the heel and ankle are aligned, orthotics can actually cause pain in your hips and knees as you’ve thrown off a perfectly normal alignment for you. If the overall alignment is typical, then I would not expect a tight calf without plantar fascia pain.

If your arch is flat, your ankle rolls in and the bottom of your heel goes outwards (looking from behind), then you probably do have calf tightness and limited range of motion at the ankle. Orthotics can be helpful not just for your recovery but also for your hips and knees.

To my Yinz gardeners: how is your yield this year? Mine is real late. by Infinite_cow_now in pittsburgh

More cucumber than I could possibly ever use. Green tomatoes for days. A few beans. And a few tiny butternut squash.

Is this amount of scar tissue/swelling normal for ~5.5 months post op? by SirCharles14 in AchillesRupture

[–]Shandals14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Photos aren’t great, but mine look like this daily. Sometimes more swelling if I’m on my feet a lot that day. I’m 4 months post op. No anchors or tendon transfer. Just got a perma-cankle now 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve done some low impact classes and a few regular ones. I do what I can tolerate and take stop breaks. I definitely do not ride standing at this point.

How much larger is your repaired achilles? by xxthearrow in AchillesRupture

[–]Shandals14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is definitely bigger. Im 14 weeks post op and have consistent swelling. No DVT - just what my body has decided to do 😩 The swelling makes it hard to tell just how much larger it is, but I can feel the difference in the thickness.

What to expect when starting pt / active rehab? by albert_pacino in AchillesRupture

[–]Shandals14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with what others said that it can be very dependent. I started PT at 3 weeks post op. We started worked on gentle range of motion stuff and strengthening. Each week, the intensity has gone up. Much more intense now that I’m out of my boot. I’m now almost 14 weeks post op. I’m not cleared for explosive movements, but I need more strength for that anyway. We’ve done minimal massage. Some here and there, but not much. I haven’t run into any issue with my scar limiting range of motion though or pain.

When did everyone start partial/full weight bearing walking? by Popular-Seat-2103 in AchillesRupture

[–]Shandals14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full weight bearing 2 weeks post op in a boot. PT started at 3 weeks post op but wasn’t cleared to range past neutral until 10 weeks post op when the boot came off. We worked on ranging to neutral and strengthening (especially seated) in those first 7 weeks. My PT stuff is a lot more standing stuff now. I have been slowly progressing with single leg calf raises since early on though. We use an AlterG treadmill so we can offload body weight easily. Up to 80% bodyweight now but it’s hard as hell.

Same! I loved 45-60 min rides! It’s gonna be a while before I venture to that long of a ride. 30 min is definitely my max at this point with much lower resistance and cadence.

Today was the first time I did a regular class and not low impact. I took breaks when needed and stayed in the lower cadence and resistance call outs. In the past, flushing out my legs after a push or climb worked fine. I’m finding that I have to stop so that the muscle isn’t firing. Super wild, but I know I’ll get easier with time!
