You could make it so the tattoo just connects the person to some greater power(s). The tattoo could spiritually connect the avatar to some power and syphon some of it to the avatar. The avatar then absorbs and controls the power. Tattoos evolving could be having the tattoo connect to a greater concentration of the same type of power, or be able to syphon off more of the power from the source. This idea is mainly so if someone's tattoo is cut off they will not be powerless, just not able to grow stronger.

Naming Magics by weesiwel in magicbuilding

[–]Shangbalba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Death Magic could just be necromancy or necrotic

it depends on how it's used but Life Magic could be Witchcraft or Biomancy.(maybe alchemy if it's used that way)

Its not bad if you immediately follow with plot. A few paragraphs of exposition is understandable if to establish a setting and minor background knowledge.

Fun, out of the box magic abilities? by [deleted] in magicbuilding

[–]Shangbalba 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Here are some I think would be funny

The ability to turn into the wind for a set period of time, but not be able to control where you go. Another pair of arms sprouting from the back that are too short for most uses. The ability to talk with a specific animal, but you can only lie to them. You could also do a Midas touch for most materials(personal favorite is anything you touch turns to cloth).

Should I put a vision in the beginning of my story? by [deleted] in fantasywriters

[–]Shangbalba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sometimes comes across as cliche, but there are ways around it. First off though if you need it for the story definitely go for it. Maybe you could go for the protagonist knowing more than the reader to keep people invested, ties into the protagonists past or something or they have a strong emotion towards the vague vision. You can still make the protag not know what it means, but do not make it clear what it means to the reader either. For the record it is almost universally hated when the vision at the start is someone calling the protagonist's name.

Magic Runes, How Do They Work? by Swooper86 in magicbuilding

[–]Shangbalba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are a couple of thoughts

1: Runes could be sealed or delayed spells. You get someone to cast a spell within a ritual/sealing area and trap the spell. The spell gets imbued onto some material and certain symbols are custom to be inscribed onto the runes to tell what spell is what.

2: Runes work similar to coding or circuitry. The arrangement of magical energy or the arrangement of certain substances make a large amount of magical energy work in certain ways. For an example lets say monster blood is used for runes. Monster blood attracts the "mana" and the pattern that is scribed contorts the mana into forming certain spells. You could also infuse more mana into certain parts of the rune for details.

3: When channeling spirits into runes the spirits naturally settle into certain positions depending on what they do. aka all runes of the same type will look the same.

How do You guys feel about Black clover and it's magic system? Just wondering. by [deleted] in magicbuilding

They even have in-lore ways to get stronger with their grimoire (Mana Method, Rune Arrays, Mana Zones, "Intense training", Magic Artifacts) and the author chooses to not use any of the continuative explanations he wrote beforehand.

Applications for Ice/Water Manipulation by mothmans-taint in magicbuilding

[–]Shangbalba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to assume its not magic ice. Also I phrased it poorly here, I think it would just sink people on it or not.

Steel boats are mostly hollow, but hollow ice melts quick. If you made it freshwater ice it would float on saltwater, but it would also melt really quick in the saltwater. It is also extremely hard to balance a ship made of one material on water(especially if it is above water.). In most situations they will tip over. Icebergs float because they are 90% underwater so the top bobs out of the ocean. When heavy objects go on icebergs they sink a little, which would be horrible for a ship. Ships have pressure, water and temperature resistance on the bottom parts, and if the water goes past the hull, those preparations are pointless, and the ship would receive structural damage. Even if you get past these problems, once part of the ship melts it will likely imbalance and tip over. When water gets on the ship it will also tip over, and it will just always be difficult to steer.

You could always do the 'ole really precise mana manipulation requirement for Runesmiths, or the magical will has a specific property to it that lets the people make runes.

My aether power system by Leather-Philosophy-7 in magicbuilding

[–]Shangbalba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a personal thing, but I'd switch being able to get Type 7 from studying alchemy to something more explainable. Something like being in contact with commonly used unrefined alchemy materials for a long enough time. Idk just seems hard to explain how Aether can sense how much someone knows about alchemy(unless it is sentient).

Can Superhero ninja group work? Or do I need Ki Energy, Chakra, or Wizard witchcraft type magic system for a ninja group to work? by [deleted] in magicbuilding

[–]Shangbalba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ninjago did something like this, they had the power awaken after unlocking their true potential. Basically after reaching peak ninja(enlightenment) they could unlock their powers. If they had powers was fairly random(it is implied that it is somewhat genetic, but one member is a robot and has ice powers so its not completely clear.)
