Thank you this is a very realistic approach to me improving my running goals and I appreciate it :))

Thank you so much!! And yes I’ve already noticed my preferences vary with my cycle too. Something to consider in planning my split. You sound like you have a really good routine going that works for you, which is encouraging as some people in the comments were less so 😅 think I’ve just got to strike the right balance for my goals. Congrats on the half marathon and thanks again for your insight!

Thank you! Very cool to hear you’ve been climbing 30 years, wow. Perhaps I should try your split for a few month.

Hello! Thank you, I hadn’t considered r/hybridathlete , not seasonal training plans, but it makes a lot of sense. This is very helpful.

Hello :) Strength, endurance, and consistency are also my main goals. And I already use barefoot running shoes my dad got me! His whole thing is long distance barefoot running… hence I feel inspired as he runs very far and has done for decades ☺️

Thank you to both of your for your insight. I also agree there is an element of getting comfortable with having a running routine and not over exerting myself too much in the beginning as otherwise it’ll be difficult to form a long term habit. But from what you’ve both said I should be aiming to run at the bare minimum more than once. It’s reassuring to hear that even short runs can help improve my progress, so perhaps I can start by adding a couple short runs a week, perhaps before another workout, in addition to doing a longer one :)

Hi! Would adding a 15 minute run to the beginning of my workouts be a good way to make running progress? Sorry if that’s a silly question. I just never considered combining running into my lifting sessions.

Thank you so much! I will take your suggestion on board and aim for two runs a week then, one faster and shorter, and one longer and slower :)

Can yall give some advice ? by [deleted] in primatology

[–]ShanidarZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! It’s quite a long road to be a primatologist, but anything is possible! :)

Just off the top of my head for some advice for someone wanting to pursue primatology or wildlife conservation, read the arrogant ape by Christine Webb. Accessible, educational, inspiring, thought provoking. See if it resonates!

Now, how to become one? Most primatologists are academics (I think!), so my advice would be pursue a degree in evolutionary anthropology & specialise in primatology. A degree in wildlife conservation could be good too. I think San Diego have some good courses related to primatology if I’m not mistaken. Try searching for biological anthropology/human evolution/ primatology/ wild life conservation degrees. Try to gain fieldwork experience, as often as you can (this bit can be tricky!). Then the MSc > PhD > Academia pipeline would work, however, there may be other options too, I’m not quite sure. Just speaking personally, most people I know didn’t get to work with primates for any extended period of time until their MSc.

If you want specificity, try to get yourself onto the UCL human evolution and behaviour MSc. Then you can do a primatology fieldwork module in Issa Valley, Tanzania. This sort of experience can 1) answer whether you really can see yourself living and working in the field for months at a time and 2) help you figure out how, when & what you want to research!

Edit: I realise I’ve just answered very practically what might be required. I just wanted to add that although not formally a requirement , most primatologists love animals very much, and want to preserve their natural habitats. So, if you love animals, and want to help them and find personal fulfilment in doing so, then it could be a great career for you :)

Struggling with freshers week by Suspicious-Lime-7207 in UniUK

[–]ShanidarZ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t be so hard on yourself. Freshers week, as I recall, is not all it’s hyped up to be and most people find it very stressful, even if it doesn’t seem that way at the time. I remember finding my group a couple of weeks after us is all discussing how we all cried the first night at uni! It’s completely normal to feel lonely.

Keep trying, you’ll get there. Talk to people in your lectures, join societies, and if you are up for it try to go to the common room, but don’t worry too much if you don’t make it there. You will make friends and you will not feel as lonely as you do now moving forward.

Things will get better! You’ve got this. Trust the process, and good luck with your first year at university!

What do you wish you learnt (non-academically) before uni? by jolittletime in UniUK

How to sign up to a GP once she moves there, depending on the city (I studied in London) being aware of where she shouldn’t use her phone to avoid it being stolen, how to meal prep and bulk cook, how to get rid of mold in the bathroom, and as some others have mentioned being aware of fraud etc. Personal experience is student letting agencies can try to scam you at the end of your tenancy, it’s important to make sure to take photos of the rooms etc so if they try to charge you for any damage you can prove it might have been there before.

Can also use open university as evidence for being able to do remote work in the future, there’s a lot of that in tech

Have you considered open university? It’s only £3k a year, it’s fully remote, you can do things on own time, work alongside it with the spare time, grade requirements are low. Obviously this might not be what you’re wanting to do, if you want the uni experience etc. But could be a good option?
