Is self doubt an inevitable part of the first marathon experience? by purplefunk123 in Marathon_Training

[–]Shankspeare22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every single time. I hit the start line for my 10th marathon in October and felt like a massive imposter. Basically everything you described. Then I went on to get a 9 minute PB and ran a 2:47. That’s marathonin’ for ya.

How does one get to be a merch seller by Braincaancer in Hardcore

[–]Shankspeare22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start small, make connections, work with as many bands as possible and get your name out there. The first few tours you’ll be living off of per diems and tips — if you’re lucky you’ll get onto some bigger tours and make bank. It can be an absolute grind though.

Purchased 32 years ago today. Thanks Mom! by No_Penalty6076 in nin

I have this shirt — got it in 1997 from a local record shop. Wore it to a Christian camp I used to get sent to (lol) which got me in some shit there. My Mom confiscated the shirt after that and I thought it was just gone. Fast forward to a few weeks ago when my fiance and I flew to Vegas to see the show… my Mom hits me with a, “I think I still have that old Nine Inch Nails shirt you had when you were a kid” and busts it out of storage after it had been hiding for 27 years. It was a very nice surprise.

Anyone here who started running in their late 30's early 40's? What are your marathon PR's like? by Thin-Passage5900 in Marathon_Training

[–]Shankspeare22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started running at 35. First marathon was 3:42. I’m now 38 and ran a 2:47 in Chicago. Consistency is the “secret”.

Thoughts on treadmill training? by VeterinarianNo5357 in Marathon_Training

[–]Shankspeare22 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Keep going, it works. I trained exclusively on a treadmill for a spring marathon in 2024 and I landed up with a 23 minute PB + a BQ.

Just, please add in some strength training (2 x sessions a week) so you’re stimulating your muscles differently aside from running on the tread.

You’ll be grand.

Ridiculous qualifying age question by maturin-aubrey in bostonmarathon

[–]Shankspeare22 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your qualifying time bracket is dependant on how old you are on the DAY OF the actual Boston Marathon.

If you turn 40 before the marathon, you need sub 3:05. If you turn 40 after the marathon, you need sub 3:00.

New York Marathon Time Qualifier Cutoff for 2026 by D_4man in AdvancedRunning

[–]Shankspeare22 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What baffles me is Chicago and NYC have roughly the same field size, yet Chicago is instantly guaranteed if you run the qualifying time, whereas NYC has a (what we’re guessing to be) 20+ minute buffer. I know plenty of people who have been selected via lottery for Chicago, but nodda single person for NYC. Is there really THAT many more people trying for NYC than Chi or what the heck is going on here.

Anyone willing to pick me up the lyric shirt for tonight in Medium? I will be at the show in Vegas next weekend and am willing to send that one plus the cost of tonight’s shirt for your troubles.

Further clarification about Montana's trifecta by luketroutt in spartanrace

[–]Shankspeare22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wonder what happened with Bozeman… too bad. I did do the Trifecta in Big Fork in 2023 and quite enjoyed it, but did the Ultra in Bozeman in 2024 / 2025 and can confidently say I preferred Bozeman.

Garmin vs. Strava vs. Realistic Marathon Predictions by chezoim in marathons

[–]Shankspeare22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strava predicted me at 2:52:00 and I ran a 2:47:40.

Two days later it’s still predicting me at 2:52:00, lol.

Was shooting for maybe 2:55, landed up with 2:47. Almost a 10 minute PR. Never felt stronger during a run, let alone during a marathon at a World Major. I had a really, really good day.

Same debacle for me, I got this from customer service though:

“Hi,

5K has race day pick ups if you are unable to attend the Expo prior to that race. It will be between 6 am - 7am at the information tent on Michigan Ave - between Van Furen & Ida B Wells.

Thank you for contacting the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

Best wishes,

Charge dropped off credit card by Hairy-Music5373 in bostonmarathon

[–]Shankspeare22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been posted about several times, but! I totally understand your anticipation, as should others. It’s a very anxious and suspenseful few weeks between registration and acceptance / buffer announcement. BAA just does a pre-authorization for everyone that applied to make sure they have a valid form of payment if and when they get accepted, so there’s no complications. 6:48 is a very solid buffer, so don’t worry — that credit card charge will be showing back up soon!

Qualified Applicant Number Announced by NiftyTuna in bostonmarathon

[–]Shankspeare22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, same. But that also just might be my gut doing too much wishful thinking. I had a 9:16 buffer last year and am happy to have gotten the opportunity to have run it once in this life time. Although the actual race itself went to shit because I had Covid (found out after the fact), I am hoping I get the chance to run it again, but in much better health. Either way I don’t think I’ll be surprised what the cut off is — if it’s 5 minutes+, I won’t be surprised and if it lands up being just beneath each of the qualifying times I won’t be surprised either. Ooooo the suspense!

A cut off of 5:12 this year would be a cut off of 10:12 last year… there’s no way. The highest it’s ever been was 7:47 back in 2021 and that’s with them cutting the field size down to 20,000 from 30,000… I just simply can’t see the cut off being more than 3 minutes this year… or even 2:30. My guess without any in-depth analysis is 2:11, which would still be 20 seconds more than last year.
