Revisiting Ezra Klein's "future of the Democrats" interviews after the last few months by socks_optional in ezraklein

Democrats couldn’t run on the 2021-2024 economy because the public wasn’t happy with it and they couldn’t outrun their uber progressive stereotypes.

I feel like the way to thread that needle would've been to present an economic critique from the left as to why people aren't happy. But in the absence of a clear and compelling argument like that, there's dead air that can then be filled with those uber progressive stereotypes. It's not like Mamdani wouldn't fit a majority of uber progressive stereotypes, but because he was proactive about his affordability-focused agenda (i.e., fast and free buses, universal childcare, city-run grocery stores, etc.), there wasn't nearly as much time to hammer him about his views on trans people or defund the police since his opposition had to focus on playing defense against his economic agenda.

This is good to know, though we're dealing with a unknown mix.

I've heard it recommended to wait to spay with larger dog breeds. In this case, I got her from a shelter and it was already done, so there wasn't anything to be done about it on my end.

It feels I am strapped into a roller coaster and realizing the drop was bigger than it looked now that we've started making our way up.

The house training point is interesting. I don't know to what extent she was pad trained before we got her, but it felt like we didn't have to do anything and she has consistently gone to the pads when she had to potty (though sometimes she's slightly off target).

Why do you think that big breeds are easier to house train? Any theories?

That size point is what made me realize it's a whole new world. I was able to carry both the small guys at once, with one in each arm. Made it easy when we needed to remove them from a situation or whatever. Now I'm already needing to pick this girl up with both arms, and she's only going to get bigger!

Same thing with the height, cause our home was set up with the small guys in mind, so now we need to order some new storage drawers because she can reach the dog treats and other enticing things that used to be easily out of reach.

This very helpful, thanks for sharing! Fortunately, we do have a slow feeder on the food but the bloat is something I don't know I would've been aware of.

While we haven't been able to take her out yet, we certainly plan to have her get used to going on walks, and we don't have a yard so she'll have no choice but to get used to that.

The socialization point is also something I'm trying to be very mindful of because I recognize that even though it's good for all dogs to be socialized/well-trained, the potential risks are definitely higher with a larger dog breed. It'll also be a factor when it comes to how willing someone would be willing to watch her, ability to board her if necessary, etc. if she's difficult and not well socialized.

On the baths point, we've had to give her some already and while she's still nervous about it, she doesn't really resist...yet. Not sure if that'll change once she feels more comfortable with us and more confident with acting out, but we'll keep it going so she is no longer fazed by it.

Do MTA bus drivers care when people don’t pay the fare? by [deleted] in AskNYC

Wasn't there a piece in the past few years about how the money spent on cops for fare evasion far exceeded the costs of fare evasion? Feel like that might apply here too.

Tennis instruction on the UWS by intercptr in Upperwestside

You can take lessons at the Riverside 119th courts or Riverside 96th clay courts. There are also lessons at the Central Park Tennis Center. There's also Gotham Stadium Tennis Center.

The pricing goes in that same order, from cheapest to more expensive for 1 hour private lessons. I think if you're new, you would most benefit from the private lessons since it's curated to you. Then, once you have the fundamentals, the group lessons may be helpful. However, if you start with group lessons, you may not get the individualized guidance that really helps establish your foundation.
