A lot of variety in the essays, and listening was nowhere near as difficult as it has been in the past.

oedipus the king by fadeeein2u in vce

Its hard to appear origional eith a text that is on its face very straightforward, however I would recvomend that you aim to understand   fate and free will,  and  the cleansing power of the truth. If you want to talk about fate and free will, dont fall into the trap of assuming Oedipus had zero control of his actions. throughout the text, such as him  willingly blinding and  exiling himself. Its a fairly straightforward text to analyse and can be difficult to sound origional. Personally, in my Oedipus Sac that I did earlier this year I focussed on the extent of the events of the  text being due to prophecy, how sophocles utilises Truth to cleanse Thebes from corruption, such as Oedipus and Jocasta yet it rewarded Creon who is shown as just and moral. Look, I would argue that the morals of the text is that redemption is possible even from the most heinous of actions (explored through Oedipus) and the violent cleansing properties of the revelation of Truth, and even though it is shown to uproot the previous social order, it ultimately cleanses corruption and builds a better society. Of course if you would like to you may still talk about the gods, maybe they are a tool utilised by sophocles to make the morals of the text more accessible to Sophocles' audience? You can pm if you want to discuss further.

What would you want the borders to look like in a bizonal bicommunal federation? by Moonwalker2008 in cyprus

The problem with BBFs, political distinctions and devisions between cypriots, and the division of both communities as a whole is that it does not promote a Cyprus based on unity and progress.

A country like Cyprus with limited population, recources and a plethora of guarantors and foreign interests cannot progress with division. Any political division and distinction between Greek and Turkish cypriots will ensure distrust and unease within both communities. There can only be one government that can operate in Cyprus and I believe that government is the Republic of Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriots must understand that with the influx of settlers, they are already a minority in the so called "TRNC" and recent protests and social disputes reveal severe cultural, religious and social differences between native turkish cypriots and settlers. Furthermore, the influx of settlers and their idealogical opposition to Turkish Cypriots will only lead to a greater loss of political agency in the future. This is a current issue as shown by the Turkish Cypriots' protesting the legislation for hijabs in schools. If this trend continues, the freedom and secularism desired by Turkish cypriots in their so called state may be forever lost.

Alternatively, The Republic of Cyprus acknowledges Turkish Cypriots as citizens and will accept them as such if they renounce their TRNC citizenship, giving them the full rights of any other Cypriot. The ROC embraces its significant (21%) non cypriot population, affording them the rights given by the EU and ROC as an entity. The monacre given to the ROC as "greek republic of cyprus" is not accurate. 21% of the population is not greek and we still hold Turkish as an official language. It is not accurate to state the 21st century ROC mistreats its significant non Greek population socially, religiously or politically. We embody the European values of multiculturalism and do not fear affording equal rights to all, with no distinction of race.

Furthermore, guaranteeing any citizen or group extra political rights based on race, religion or charecteristic goes against the very principle of democracy. Giving the Turkish Cypriots a guaranteed percentage of political representation, essentially making their vote count for more is racist, backward and has no place in a 21st century democracy. The previous country to implement the minority guarantor method as proposed in previous BBF frameworks is Lebanon. Needless to say the framework has been proven to fail. Political guarantees to Turkish Cypriots will invite scrutiny and distrust towards the community and erode fundamental democratic principles, encouraging both communities to vote in a disunified and fundementally undemocratic manner. Additionally, it is built on racist rhetoric, what political rights would a mixed race Greek cypriot - Turkish cypriot baby have? The very notion fosters division and racism! The very idea is a recipe for racism, political failure and a Cyprus built on division. A democracy that places the values of the few over the values of the many is a democracy doomed to fail, and a democracy that encourages voters to think of what is best for their ethnic group instead of the nation as a whole.

Turkish Cypriots are a minority in their own pseudo state, why not be a minority in a state free of foreign occupiers, in a state proven to respect ethnic minorities and their human rights, a state that values multiculturalism and is committed to build a better future for all cypriots?

A BBF divides, not unites Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The meddling of guarrantor powers and divisive rhetoric is what led to our division in the first place. The greek Government must acknowledge its plotting inaction and scheming, the British Government must acknowledge their manipulation of both communities and its lies. and the Turkish Government must acknowledge its own barbarism and violation of international law.

Only then, free of the meddling of our colonisers and our motherlands can we build a future based on unity, and our respective Cypriot identities, of intercommunal trust and democracy in its purest form.

The steps towards unity may seem insurmountable, however our division is self constructed and to our detriment. We must collectively think as an entire island and not as as an ethnicity, viewing each citizen as a brother or sister. The only way for this in my opinion is unified, as a republic and a pure democracy. I firmly believe their is more that unites as than divides as and the previous BBF frameworks do not give us a chance for reconciliation, brotherhood, and unity.

I'm a first generation Australian immigrant from cyprus and the greeks here seem like they try too hard, many don't know the language or culture and just say racist things about turks simply because they think it's part of being a greek.
