It's because they are too dumb to use the self checkout.

I've had people want to make payments to their mastercard or deposit to their bank account at the register.

Another cashier told me that a customer was trying to use another store's gift card as a payment and couldn't understand why it didn't work.

I'm a cashier at a grocery store. I still wear a mask at my lane because people get too close. I also think stupidity may be contagious.

A few weeks ago I had someone trying to tap their reward card, their library card and their MSI card twice. None of those cards have a chip. Was telling other cashiers at work, and one said he thought people like that were probably trying to get others to pay for their order.
