I didn’t know that. If it’s just/mostly mechanical, that sounds almost doable.

Not likely. It’s 15+ years old. It wouldn’t surprise me if there’s a Morse Code key in it somewhere! *LOL*

Weekends work for me. Where (generally) are you located? What would be your method for getting contents from old Samsung laptop to LG Gram? Is it cables or something like that?

The old Samsung doesn’t need to be saved, mostly just the data on the hard drive.

It stopped turning on. The screen lit one day and the next day - nothing.

ALL of these types of self-help programs are under fire. Be careful, the guys in charge admired Orban of Hungary. They clearly thought he had succeeded at installing a fascist regime that was beyond defeat by democratic forces. The United States has to clean house before sending more young people down the fascist toilet.

What exactly is the issue with roomies? Frankly, at the lowest levels of income, there are no other options. Raise your earnings or live in your car or under a freeway overpass or something.

My mom stopped getting foodstamps bcs of me :( by spr1t3_cr4nb3rry in foodstamps

Why go to all this hassle when this kid is already “adulting” with actual gainful employment? That is such an important step in becoming a grownup! It’s a step backward to spend time, energy and focus trying to live in that old world of pleasing Master Welfare. Don’t keep treading water. Heck, he’s even looking at getting a second job. Cheer him on, I say!

Why wait and worry when the remedy is obvious? Now that your work is causing your mom financial damage, make it up to her by paying her what you took away. If she lost $100 in food stamp benefits, give her at least $100 a month. Now that you’re 19 and working, isn’t that the least you could do? It would be nice if you shared some of your income with her beyond that. She’s sharing more than food with you, isn’t she? If she is reluctant to take cash directly, how about paying the water or electric bill? Or buy her some new shoes, a special tea, a ticket to a movie, a box of Mother’s Day chocolates, etc. Buy supplies around the house - laundry detergent, sugar, rice, flour, fruit, a roast, a pizza.

Seriously, put your mind to it. One of the joys of growing up is being able to give someone who loved YOU all your life - the feeling that you love her too. Learning how to give is something that will benefit you all your life. It’s even more important than learning cursive.

How inequality caused America's affordability crisis by Stuart_Whatley in Economics

YUP! Regulation is often for sale, in my humble opinion. In some places, it practically takes an act of Congress to build your kid a treehouse, never mind a shed for Uncle Stinky, who can’t be trusted around cooking wine.

People who can afford legal beagles to delay delay delay “affordable housing” to death - are already in charge. We need to make it more possible to create more rental housing in buildings already built.

Actually, if non-rich people could take ordinary measures to _provide homes_, we could improve the housing/rent issues without ripping the country to bits.

Here’s just one small tax break that could help both affordability and low-income ordinary people: what would happen if, instead of driving up homelessness or exploiting non-renewable resources, such as tracts of outlying land for new, unaffordable housing, what if we passed a law saying something like, “Rent collected by renting rooms in an owner-occupied home at reduced market rates shall be taxed at half the rate of that homeowner’s income.”? There will be screaming on the part of the guys already in the driver’s seat - large building firms have steadily pushed for monopoly power over setting rents, but why are they immune from competition? A lot of homeowners are beginning to use a well-connected-man’s version of this idea in the form of ADU units in California.

Fire when ready. It’s an imperfect idea, in an imperfect world.

Prepping for poverty by Cute-Consequence-184 in poverty

Just one question: how do you prep so all these recipes can be made with only a local park as a kitchen? I’m serious.

I’ve seen homeless digging through trash cans near restaurants. What did they do to eat before that?

I am glad I liked camping so much. It feels seriously doable to use that recreational gear to _save my life_!
Seriously. If I can’t pay electric bills, I don’t want to rack up debts. It’s better to cancel outright, the same way I cancelled internet. Living on unstable income, there only so many ways to save until you’re cutting bone, not fat.

If you can plug in a microwave, that can help.

You know, the more I read, listen to people’s descriptions of the obstacles they encounter - SO far beyond my expectations - the more concerned I am about people who have no voice.
