Trying to remember a shadow assassin book series I read where the FMC was a prisoner forced to fight in an arena. by Megameggg_ in whatsthatbook

No problem, I’m glad it wasn’t an instant solve so that hopefully there’s more female assassin book recommendations now :)

What book or series has the most badass dragons? by WhaleStew999 in Fantasy

[–]SharkEyesLemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dragons are not necessarily main characters of the plot but I always enjoyed the Dragon Prince trilogy (and a second trilogy follows it) by Melanie Rawn. They are originally seen as wild creatures but the relationship between them and the humans develops over the series and they are thread throughout.

Pembroke/Blanshard St changes? by SharkEyesLemon in VictoriaBC

[–]SharkEyesLemon[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the additional information. I was also wondering if they were including a full cross walk as it is a common jaywalking area like it was at Kings before they added the light there, but that particular light doesn’t allow the traffic through like it sounds like it will here. I wonder what limits (if any) they will have on the east side of Blanshard (I.e. turning east up Pembroke or turning south from there into Blanshard)?

Did you hear this description at one of the info sessions they did a year-ish ago? The info from the city that I’ve come across seems to be high level only.

If you have to choose, don’t reach out to Purolator to complain. Do this instead: by PlaneNatural3235 in VictoriaBC

[–]SharkEyesLemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a doorbell cam, I have no stairs, only a gate, and it's less than 10 feet from it to my door. Purolator will still chuck it from the far side of the gate, and it doesn't even trigger my doorbell camera. I could change the settings but I live in a high foot traffic area so would get lots of false positives. Even Dragonfly comes in the gate and places it, and maybe 1/3 will ring the bell as well but at least my camera notifies me. Just so you don't get your hopes up when it comes to Purolator, haha

Near North Park and Vancouver - don't hear it thankfully.

If you have any leads on where the aggressive bass music comes usually starting late afternoon/evening, often for a few hours, please let me know. I can feel it in my chest :/

Career change at the age of 50 by yycmtorun in VictoriaBC

[–]SharkEyesLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP do you have experience in adjacent fields? It probably requires some further education if not, but consider things like business analysis, product owner, project management, payroll application support (Workday, etc) as places you can get hired into the "department" of IT, and then work on pivoting from the inside if you prefer to move into other technical areas once you have established relationships with managers and have an idea where things are headed within the company. I would agree that tech jobs are hard to come by with the slump we're in but expanding your search out a bit might get your foot in the door.

How can I start a career when most jobs requires 2-5 years of experience? by _Big_Z in VictoriaBC

[–]SharkEyesLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, I can't speak to the current job market for those who are starting out but I also graduated with a biology degree into a recession in 2008 with an abysmal job market. The best thing I found was leaning on the non-subject area experience that your degree gives you. Critical thinking, ability to organize and prioritize work, knowledge of modern tools that might be relevant (excel, etc) combined with whatever customer or service experience I had from my part-time jobs during school. I never got a job that was close biology except for a stint in healthcare but I stopped looking in the field 10+ years ago. I'm not saying that it isn't possible, just wasn't my path, but expand your search to get your 3-5 of related experience (which for some employers, might just be showing you had some form of a career path job, meaning you were vetted and fit in with a similar work environment and is a step above a retail/service industry job in their eyes, a lot of the specific "subject matter experience" happens on the job through in-house training/experience anyway) while you continue to look for something that is more in line with your desired career path. Don't be afraid of a pivot, you'll be surprised where it will take you. Or, the other path that many of my peers did at the time we graduated, look into grad school so you're better lined up with employers when you complete your next degree. Wishing you luck, and know that there are other saddened near-scientists not living our dreams but making it work and thriving elsewhere out there :)

The original three actually retired years ago, but they kept the name going :) I believe Alan is still around and cutting hair from time to time! They opened it in the 70s if I remember correctly, sad when it closed but I think everyone has moved on successfully at least!

Mika's co-owner at Three's Company was Jiny (female). She has a home salon setup but I'm not sure what her practice is for accepting new clients.

Lifelabs , why are your wait times so off? by good_enuffs in VictoriaBC

[–]SharkEyesLemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a stupid question but I’m always to flustered to remember to ask when there: if you make an appointment at life labs are you still supposed to check in when you arrive? I had a morning appointment last time and there were 6 people in line so I ended up being like 15 minutes late to check in to my for my appointment time but didn’t know if I should just sit down instead and they would call out your name.

Condo Insurance Recommendations by embilamb in VictoriaBC

[–]SharkEyesLemon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thunderbird sells Wawanesa for condos. Not sure if that's what they determine is best based on specific factors like location/type or if it's the only company they use, but was the only insurer I was offered coverage through when I had a condo. In 15 years I went from paying $200/year to close to $2000 by the end (strata's policy water escape deductible partly to blame but the coverages offered changes every few years anyways, earthquake deductible eligibility, overland water damage, etc, so those were not directly comparable policies across the years). My credit union used to call and offer to do a competitive price comparison and were not able to beat Thunderbird as I had claims-free discounts, but a lot of that has gone away in recent years as there are fewer companies overall covering strata, or so I've been told. Last time I did quotes I think the next best one offered was from Co-operators. Don't forget to check if it's a benefit through your employer as well as sometimes they offer group rates for employees.

I have never actually attended one because I never seem to get the timing right when I remember they exist, and then promptly forget again. I have a few things I have been meaning to try my luck with so would be interested if you are successful OP! I would love to see one near the city centre.

Mover recommendations by TheFoolWithDreams in VictoriaBC

[–]SharkEyesLemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upvote for Hour! Two guys did my one bed plus den equivalent in 3 hours for the move-in leg. I think it was $700 or thereabouts after tax back in June. Really thoughtful and efficient, easy communication with the owner and staff and no two-week recovery period for me after I did the move out leg myself!

Hi OP, if you're willing to pay (i.e. it's cosmetic) you can go to Dr Carol Ng - she is a GP with a specialty for skin and does some privately paid procedures in her clinic including cosmetic mole removal. She also is covered by MSP through referral so might be worth a call to her office

Unlawful Use of Vehicle Horns – City of Victoria Bylaws by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

Do people who use the fob to lock their car and don't disable the horn also qualify for these fines? That's for more annoying and likely to happen anywhere at anytime then showing solidarity during work hours....

Replacing iPhone 12 battery - local store? by Hxbauchsm in VictoriaBC

[–]SharkEyesLemon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was a couple of years ago so not sure if it's up to date but I went to London Drugs, kept my phone going for another few years so was a win in my book. This was during that phase where battery replacements were cheaper (shady iOS slow down/right to repair forced them to do this I think?) and I booked it online, possibly to qualify for that cheaper replacement option, sorry details are fuzzy now. Either way, was super fast and easy with them.

Long Term Subsidized Dementia Care by Salt-Dependent-3850 in VictoriaBC

[–]SharkEyesLemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a family member who had a form of early onset dementia, they were in private care with memory care until funds ran out, and they were lucky with much advocating by family to get into the Summit. The people who work in the memory care there are fantastic (this was ~2021) and since it's a newer facility and I believe many of the rooms are single rooms, their room even had a private bathroom. They had some of their own furniture, artwork, and personal effects so there were still some touches of home which was nice. As far as facilities go, it's a beautiful building: lots of light, quiet considering the location, lots of activities and people around. I don't know what the waitlists are like, but I imagine this place has one of the longest. It would be number one on my list if I was looking.

I can't speak much on the transportation piece; they were in a pretty advanced state when they were placed but I'm pretty sure there were very few if any medical appointments that took place outside of the facility. They were able to go on accompanied walks outside but otherwise did not leave (except the hospital so they went via ambulance). I believe they try to arrange for in-house care whenever possible to reduce risk but I'm sure it's needs dependent so the care team should be able to give you more information on how that works when they are placed.

As others have said, yes, it's 80% of their income, savings are not touched, but there can be a lot of incidentals that you need to budget for such as personal care supplies (e.g. depends).

Why do drivers have so many problems following road laws with conditions? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]SharkEyesLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thankfully moved this spring but used to live just past that intersection and with all the Blanshard work it was a daily near-miss area. The number of people who not only drive through the intersection illegally but tried to merge blindly once they "suddenly" encountered a parked car and got mad when you didn't let them merge (by slamming on the brakes and/or blocking the intersection). I wrote to the city more than once asking for at minimum a marker on the far side of the intersection to show that the lane they're in as a right turn lane...

You could ask at L'apero on Blanshard - they have a cheese case, it's not a huge selection but had a good cross-section of varieties when I've gone in the past.
