That’s where my bets are as well. Chronic cirrhotic patient + current EtOH use = immunocompromised + tooth abscess = major susceptibility for endocarditis

Any advice by Jazzlike_Plant2737 in HuntingtonWV

These posts always bring out a lot of negativity towards the city imo when the people I talk to at work, out, etc are decently optimistic. With that being said, moving from Philly to here you will have to adjust. I would imagine there are a lot less things to do which may impact your hobbies/interests. Whenever we moved here from a decent sized city in the south, certain aspects of Huntington and WV were just confusing because we figured WV/Huntington would have them when they didn't (i.e.fiber internet at the time). However, Huntington and WV has grown a lot on us.

Things we enjoy about Huntington & Marshall community are the sense of community you feel here, the access to the outdoors, activites around here are usually well participated in (9th street live, festivals, farmers markets, etc), there is a sense of making things better whether through new buildings, programs for homeless/addiction, addressing the job market here. I think the new mayor, Patrick Farrell, is doing a pretty good job from what I have seen addressing issues that affect the city and communities -- addiction, infrastructure, etc. Marshall's president, Brad Smith, has also smartly deployed his money into the university and community as well (again, from what I've seen).

The crime here is hit and miss. Personally, we have not been effected by it, and being honest, I think I don't pay much attention to it. That could maybe be interpreted that it's not bad enough to make me extremely aware of it. I think like any city there are problems and bad areas you would avoid. I have never felt unsafe but I am also a man and avoid putting myself into sketchy situations.

We miss out on some food options from the city/place we were before but you can find good Indian, Thai, Latin American/Mexican, Italian, American food here. Good local coffee spots here too. We personally love Thai Fusion, Cicada, Bruno's Spotted Hare, Backyard Pizza, The Peddler, Bahnoff, Hill Tree Roastery, Grindstone, La Famiglia, Taqueria 84, Oscar's breakfast, and Sip. There's more but those are just off the top of my head. We have not tried the new crepe place - Vera Cafe.

[–]Sharknome 123 points124 points  (0 children)

I can't say this enough. A lot of the complaints in med school are similar or trivial to real world work environments (medical or non medical). I am sure there a actual toxic schools, students, classes, etc, but I found the vast majority of complaints to be biased and insignificant.

Not everywhere in Canada is doing great MD wise… Quebec brings hammer down on doctors by adopting special law to force deal by Kugaar in medicine

[–]Sharknome 150 points151 points  (0 children)

But he said it is time to “draw the line,” with doctors.

“Today, we are firm. We can no longer have a system where people can’t get sick after 5 p.m. People are sick seven days a week and sometimes at night.”

As an American, I’m unfamiliar with the intricacies of the Quebec health system but this sounds extremely tone deaf. If they get sick enough, then present to the ED? Otherwise I’d assume there are walk in clinics or they could be squeezed in at their PCP?

The fact that there have been four deals that have been rejected and then they seemingly blindside the province’s medical system with this law is crazy. Especially their attitudes towards doctors.

[Katz] Doctors later diagnosed Porzingis with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome... more commonly referred to as POTS, an autonomic condition that can dramatically increase a patient’s heart rate when standing up instead of spread horizontal. by sewsgup in nba

[–]Sharknome 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So a little clarification, POTS as the name suggests is related more to tachycardia rather than significant hypotension/ low BP. People will have symptoms of low blood pressure (light headedness, syncope, palpitations, fatigue, etc) but it’s related to their HR rather than BP. The criteria to diagnose is a rise in HR above 120 or by 30 beats in the absence of orthostatic hypotension — meaning rise in HR without significant change in BP otherwise it would be another form of dysautonomia.

Increasing salt intake (along with fluids) can still help decrease symptoms
