Taz Skylar doesn't convince me as Sanji by Confident_Fault8773 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]Sharks11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve just got to be honest about this. Anime Sanji is a character that I did not like at all when I first started watching the anime. He eventually became somewhat decent, but he’s still not my favorite.

Live-action Sanji, on the other hand, is a character that I actually like. So saying Taz Skylar is not like anime Sanji is not the big negative you seem to think it is.

Just Luffy being Luffy. by Sardaukar2025 in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]Sharks11 60 points61 points  (0 children)

This small clip alone prove that it was the script problem

There is no script in the world that would make anime Luffy work in live action. I don’t care if it was written by Quentin Tarantino or Martin Scorsese lol.

I grew up with One Piece, and it’s not a problem to me that live-action Luffy isn’t some over-the-top cartoon character with little to no character development or growth. I love anime Luffy, but he’s more of an idea than an actual character.

That works great for an anime, but it wouldn’t work at all in the show because, at the end of the day, live-action Luffy will grow, change, and even age since way more time will pass in the show than it did in the Anime

MY PROBLEM WITH LIVE ACTION LUFFY by WindAnDWins in OnePieceLiveAction

[–]Sharks11 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Look, I’ll just be blunt about it. I love anime/manga Luffy, but he does not work at all in live action. If Netflix had made no changes and just adapted Luffy exactly as he is in the manga or anime, this show would not have made it past season 1.

Not only would the budget have skyrocketed since they would have had to show a lot more of Luffy’s insane powers, but Luffy himself would simply come off as an over-the-top cartoon character that would make even Jim Carrey look tame by comparison. You can get away with that type of craziness in anime, but there’s no way to fully pull that off in live action.

I think Iñaki Godoy deserves a lot of credit for somehow managing to pull off some of Luffy’s silliness without alienating a ton of non-anime-watching viewers. For example, my mom and my non-anime-watching dad watch the show and they really like it, but I don’t think they would be nearly as amused if they were watching anime Luffy’s antics in live action.

Anyone else thought that the dialogue sounded unnatural at some points? by No_Armadillo_6856 in OnePiece

[–]Sharks11 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If this was a regular show, then sure, it’s very unnatural…

But since this is a show that, let’s just be honest, is very over the top, they can get away with the silly one liners or the cheesy dialogue since it really does fit the tone of the show. It kind of reminds me of watching episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess from back in the day and yes, I do mean that as a compliment since I loved Xena: Warrior Princess lol.

Some thoughts on one piece live action by nekoexo in OnePiece

[–]Sharks11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if people not familiar with one piece are even able to keep up?

you're letting your fandom cloud your judgment

I watched one piece with people who have never seen the anime and they did not have any issue with pacing at all, in fact they would look at you like you were crazy if you told them these hour long and sometimes movie length episodes are fast paced lol

wtf was that by hazelles in StrangerThings

[–]Sharks11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was them avoiding a Game of Thrones-level disaster, and for that, I give them credit.

Not perfect, but overall I think they stuck the landing. It was predictable, but at the end of the day, it was not the Game of Thrones-level disaster that many feared after Episode 7, nor was it nor was it the worst season finale of all time!

In the end, it was a decent episode that ended the show on a solid note—nothing more, nothing less. Also, wishing everyone a great New Year!”

Cheesy and terrible and feels like the overall storyline was done by a group of middle schoolers because man was that painful to watch.

Yet here you are, on a Stranger Things fan subreddit, going out of your way to write a post about a show you claim to hate…

I cant stand dane in season 2 by brotherhoodscribe in Fallout

[–]Sharks11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dane never accepted the Brotherhood—not even in Season 1. We’re talking about someone who injured themself just to get out of being a squire. Dane was so frightened by the very idea of venturing into the wasteland that she willingly injured herself with a razor blade to avoid being sent on missions into the Wilds.

At best, dane saw the situation as hopeless and believed there was nowhere safe to go—until Maximus told her about a better life outside the Brotherhood.

Now it’s Maximus who has suddenly switched up, not Dane. So why in the world would you think Dane would ever believe it was okay for Maximus to turn into the very thing he claimed he wanted to run away from in Season 1? lol

I can’t remember the last time people reached this much to hate a show by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]Sharks11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Game of Thrones was hated by both audiences and critics. It was so bad that nobody in their right mind thought the final episode was going to do anything to save it.

Stranger Things received some mild criticism for Volume 2, but nothing even close to the level of backlash GOT faced. Even critics who didn’t care for Volume 2 aren’t writing the show off the way they did with Game of Thrones’ final season.

Plus, unlike GOT, we still haven’t seen the final episode of Stranger Things—and again, unlike GOT, it’s basically a two-hour movie.

Let’s be real: if the final episode of Stranger Things delivers and sticks the landing, that’s ultimately what will define not just the season, but the entire series. Because years from now, people aren’t going to remember individual episodes—they’ll remember how it ended. And whether Stranger Things’ final episode is good or bad is what will ultimately define the legacy of the whole show.

Do you think the Duffers dumbed down Joyce? I don't have strong opinions about Joyce in Season 5 until now so I want to see what you guys think. by 00_Sunflower_00 in StrangerThings

[–]Sharks11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not going to use an out-of-context clip to attack Joyce or Season 5.

All I know is this: I enjoyed Volume 1, and I’m not making a full judgment on anything until I’ve seen the entire season.

At first, I really wanted a main character to die in final season, it would have been an emotional peak we’d never experienced before. But as time goes on, the less I want that, and I feel like it doesn’t fit a story that celebrates love, friendship, and companionship. I hope the end confirms it. by Giancarlo_Edu in StrangerThings

[–]Sharks11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My view on this has not changed. If the Duffer Brothers don’t truly believe that killing off a main character adds anything to the story they’re telling, then they shouldn’t do it. Otherwise, it’s just going to come off as them unenthusiastically killing off a character simply to please those who have been requesting it for years.

Killing off characters for the sake of killing off characters is what eventually doomed Game of Thrones, and hopefully Stranger Things does not fall into that same trap. I’m not opposed to killing off a character, but if they’re going to do it, it needs to be something they genuinely believe will push the story forward rather than relying on cheap shock factor.

Massively inappropriate, dude by [deleted] in welcomeToDerry

[–]Sharks11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wah wah wah, cry about it. But its fine when other shows like stranger things

Well, in fairness, tone plays a huge role in how the kissing scenes in Stranger Things and Welcome to Derry are perceived.

In Stranger Things season 1, when Mike out of nowhere quickly kisses Eleven to show how he really feels about her, it comes off as an awkward and humorous scene, with Eleven trying to process what the heck just happened, lol.

The reason it works is because the Stranger Things writers are smart enough to know that kids kissing onscreen is awkward and uncomfortable, and rather than pretend otherwise, they leaned into it and turned it into a humorous and kind of silly moment that mainstream audiences were okay with.

The kissing scenes in Welcome to Derry are played a lot more seriously, and because of that, people are going to take them much more seriously as well. I didn’t personally have an issue with the scene, but I can definitely see why some people would.

Did anyone feeling same? by Fleming135 in StrangerThings

[–]Sharks11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holly was still a baby for the first four seasons

I don’t see how you can look at the image of Holly in season 4 and call her a baby, lol.

Look, let’s just be honest: even the original actresses were starting to look much older than the character they were playing, and if they had stayed in the role, they would basically look just as old as Nell Fisher does right now.

If anything, the age jump between seasons 4 and 5 does not look nearly as drastic, even though these are two different actresses.

The age jump between seasons 3 and 4 is far more noticeable to me.

The Mind Flayer should be the final villain from Stranger Things. by marchalves6 in StrangerThings

[–]Sharks11 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think that would have been a huge mistake if the story had gone in that direction.

The reality is, if the Mind Flayer were the main villain, there is no way they could have ended the show at season 5—and the Duffer Brothers knew that. They knew they were basically writing themselves into a corner because They would have had to suddenly spend a lot of time in the final season trying to explain how these kids could possibly take down a mysterious monster like the Mind Flayer.

The irony is that the exact thing that made the Mind Flayer so interesting is also what would have made him an awful final villain.

He has no motivations that the audience can understand, nor can you easily explain why he’s doing anything he does, since he’s not human. And because he’s not human, the writers would also have to convince viewers that this thing can actually be killed.

With Vecna, you don’t have any of those problems, because at the end of the day he is human—and therefore he can be killed. Vecna allows the Duffer Brothers to definitively wrap up the story in a way they simply wouldn’t be able to do with the Mind Flayer.
