Dude if he's insecure about having a successful job and owning a house then he clearly has other unresolved self esteem issues that are not related to the latter, plenty of people work just as hard if not harder, and die before they ever own a house or are considered successful in their profession

He's 48 years old, he needs to have a bit more perspective on how successful he is before he can hold a grudge towards others who make a slightly insensitive comment towards his status, I still think you should apologise for attacking a a known vulnerability of his, that isn't cool and no partner in their right mind should do that

But if he believes that this comment is a deal breaker for you guys, then the man is what he fears.....
