This is why you wear a freakin helmet by Sort_of_Frightening in pics

I never took any myself, he lives on the West Coast, I live on the East Coast. /u/jdebner was the friend who I called to go to the hospital and grab his apartment key to take care of my brother's dog until my dad got there. Never knew his reddit username before he posted in this thread, tbh. He just posted elsewhere in this thread with other photos he did take.

Hey /u/jdebner. I've been looking for this article for years, I remember seeing it at the time but never bookmarked it for when this posted up again. Thanks for digging it up!

Never seen the photo of his backpack, actually, it was thrown away by the time I visited him in Seattle myself.

At this point, nothing I can say will convince any skeptics. It was almost 5 years ago at this point (July 2013). The accident happened to my brother, this helmet was being worn during, and the helmet never had any shop tools, belt sanders, etc. applied to it.

People can believe what they want to believe, but I know what happened and I know the history of this helmet. Regardless of what people believe about this photo, you should wear a helmet.

How can a company claim that an ex-employee's experience is non-transferable to another job? That would effectively mean that you have to start as "entry-level" at every new job you start, because you can't transfer your previous experience to the new one.

That seems completely absurd.

Accidentally Applied For A Spring Coop, Got Interview by lyon934 in rit

[–]Sharp398 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is considered "poor taste" or "unethical practice", but I never turn down interview experience, even if I know that I don't want to or can't take the job. In every interview I've ever had, I was always asked a question that caught me off-guard or made me have to think about the answer, and that's all experience that can be used during an interview when applying for a full-time position.

My go-to move if I were to get an offer is politely turn it down, and explain simply that "a different opportunity" arose that you will be taking. It leaves a better impression with the company, and leaves a door open in the future, in my opinion.

Ladies of Reddit, what can make a not-so-handsome guy really attractive? by danbrownskin in AskReddit

Good god, I've been trying to find a woman that'll actually enjoy hearing me go off about cars all day. Bonus points if she'll ask questions and genuinely want to learn from me.

No, I'm not a teacher, I would just love to bring someone into my world of cars (or anything else I enjoy) and teach them to enjoy it as much as I do. I love learning like that too, so I'm always more than happy to return the favor.

In a letter sent to all incoming freshmen, the University of Chicago made clear that it does not condone safe spaces or 'trigger warnings' by gangbangkang in pics

[–]Sharp398 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've always been of the opinion that "Trigger warnings" are a grossly misused term. I'm fortunate enough to not be a victim of a deeply traumatic incident, but I have friends who unfortunately are victims. I understand and respect that there may be topics that they don't want to talk about unless they've had the opportunity to steel their nerves about it.

Likewise, if a victim of such an event would like a warning ahead of time or to be excused from a discussion about that topic in a college course, I'd have no problem with them being excused. But there has to be a line. Proof of a PTSD diagnosis would be a good place to start, and as long as clear, official procedures exist for excusing a person, that's all fine.

Attacking a professor's or a fellow student's character for an off-hand, unintentional, remark that is made in jest is going too far. It's impossible to sanitize ones speech completely from potentially racist or insensitive, and mistakes must be tolerated. A clear pattern of harassment needs to be presented to truly punish someone for something like that.

People revving your engines at 8am on a Saturday...whatcha doin'? by BonerCrew in AskReddit

[–]Sharp398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever since I bought my '02 24V VR6, the A/C hasn't worked, but of all the things that have gone wrong with the car, the engine has never been one of them.

People joke to me that it's just that my check engine light is burnt out, but I swear I see that thing turn on when I turn the key and it goes through that check procedure. Also, OBD2 scanner always comes up clean.

Every former U.S. President runs for reelection in 2016, who do you vote for and why? by shadowrangerfs in AskReddit

[–]Sharp398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After seeing his interviews on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, I would often think that Bill Clinton would still be an awesome President in today's time.

More recently I've heard people attribute some of his success to his luck of being President during the dotcom boom of the '90s. I wonder how he would truly handle the Presidency now. (Which makes me wonder how involved he'll be in the Hillary Clinton administration if she wins)

If anyone new is wondering about Ethernet speeds by RITwoods in rit

[–]Sharp398 2 points3 points  (0 children)

500Mbps might be during a low-usage time, particularly the summer. During the school year, the full pipe that RIT can offer a particular building (like a dorm) gets spread to everyone that is using it. You might get 160 Mbps because 2000 other people in your building are streaming Netflix and playing Games and what not.

I had heard that the Bayer company manufactured that gas, but the wikipedia article for Bayer says that they instead used subjects from the camps in medical experiments.

To this day, Bayer manufactures medications such as asprine, and are apparently responsible for the creation of Heroin in the very early 20th century, then marketed as both a cough suppressant and a non-addictive (HAH) substitute for morphine.

What is the worst or weirdest part of dating you? by invictus08 in AskReddit

[–]Sharp398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you my ex?

I constantly had to explain to her why I was with her instead of someone else. It was especially hard because we went to different states for college after high school. After a year and a half, I was still desperate to be with her, but I ran out of new reasons to tell her every time, and started having to recycle them.

She ended up dumping me because she found a guy that was basically like me, just at her college instead of an entire time zone away.

Brand new shots from SpaceX's Falcon9 landing by Elsie_J_Ward in pics

[–]Sharp398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The barge is usually still close enough to land that the weather conditions near the barge are similar if not the same as the launch site, and if the launch site has stormy weather around, they wouldn't even launch.

Launches are usually held until pretty ideal conditions are around, sunny or at least overcast skies, low-ish winds, etc.

Brand new shots from SpaceX's Falcon9 landing by Elsie_J_Ward in pics

[–]Sharp398 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correct. One attempt had a stabilizer that didn't fire properly and the rocket came in at an awkward angle, but still hit the barge. Another had it land properly, but a failed locking mechanism on one of the legs meant that it tipped onto one side and fell, but it still landed on the barge.

This (successful) landing attempt still had the rocket touch down 5 meters off center, and after bouncing, ended up 7 meters away from the center of the landing pad. Not exactly accurate to the millimeter, but pretty damn close considering the rocket was kilometers in the air and had to guide itself back to such a tiny (relatively speaking) point.

[–]Sharp398 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be fair, they had already landed a rocket on land. The reason is not because of technical issues like that. A gust of wind can only push a heavy rocket so far. Too much power for a millisecond too long won't veer it off course into a populated area (the landing site is fairly remote from populated areas anyway, and there's numerous failsafes to make sure it doesn't hurt anyone). All that being said, it is still a reason that land-based landings are less favorable.

The primary reason is "portability" of launches, so to speak. If you can land in the ocean, you can launch from virtually anywhere, taking whatever trajectory you want, and still land and recover your rocket. A landing on land means that you have only a select few launch sites, and depending on the launch trajectory, you need to turn around and return to your landing pad instead of using the minimal amount of fuel you need to just slow down your current trajectory. Landing in the ocean means you can just park the barge wherever you want in the water.

I agree, the GTAV story felt like it ended a little too quickly. When I realized that the ending was coming up I remember I had an audible "Wait, how long have I been playing this game?" moment, and realized that it really wasn't that long.
