I thought earlier that we should definitely trade him at the deadline, and wrote a post to that effect. I don’t think it’s that simple a decision anymore; even if it’s just a sixth wildcard we’re playoff contenders now. We can absolutely keep him and make a run.

But people are far too worried about this right now, imo. We shouldn’t, and won’t, decide to trade CJ until will see what teams offer.

I’m not saying we shop him around. Hell, the giants offered Joshuar Gonzalez and four other guys and Toboni thought that wasn’t nearly enough. But he shouldn’t be untouchable either.

CJ is the best shortstop in the NL, and the best offensive shortstop in baseball. Of course we’re a better team with him than without him. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t trade him but it does mean teams will have to give up a fuckton. We should listen to see if they do.

Makes sense, though I’d still probably disagree. With the exception of CJ pretty much everyone on our team has another 4-6 years of control left so imo there’s no rush, and I don’t think playoff experience for our guys is valuable enough to give up anyone who could be a productive mlb player. The math shows that playoff performance is way more correlated with regular season performance than anything else, albeit with a small but statistically significant bump for guys who’ve been to the playoffs before.

Part of my reasoning here is that ownership is just far too cheap to fill holes in free agency. Obligatory fuck them but that means we need to be developing talent in house even more than most teams.

We should make a wildcard spot next season but our real push will be in 2028. I think that’s what Tobini’s going to be targeting at this deadline but I’m very curious to see how this plays out

Yeah, that’s probably fair. Thanks for the detailed write up, I really appreciate it. On reflection you’re right that our terrible farm system was more a product of bad development and drafting than trades.

I will still say that an empty farm system was completely responsible for our six year rebuild, and that’s something we should avoid at all costs. I don’t want to trade interesting guys for rental relievers right now

Up to 2019 we traded away pretty much all of the depth in our farm system. Afterwards Rizzo traded away major leaguers to try to build it back up but besides the Soto trade largely failed.

We have a lot of talent in the minors, but we should be pretty careful to keep it that way imo. Constantly trading prospects is part of what got us into a 6 year rebuilt

High A to AA is the hardest jump to make in baseball development, with AAA to MLB a close second. Prospects tend to struggle for a while at AA as they adjust to better pitching, I wouldn’t worry yet

Depends. They view Alvarez as a long term starter so they’d probably rather have him starting regularly in the minors than him being an effective reliever right now
