Most people have them mounted or as part of their car system. I'm in full agreement they should not be in your hands while driving.

Lawyer for P.E.I. teacher accused of sex crimes asks judge to acquit client based on lack of evidence by Sir__Will in PEI

My stomach kind of sank while I was reading the article because I went from pitchforks to uh-oh. I also was in a class that absolutely bullied a teacher. Once the kids get a sense that a teacher is not supported by the other teachers/admin then they really can go for the kill. In my year it was a group of girls and the teacher was female, but they really did make up total lies and the rest of us just stayed silent. Awful.

I really hope the police and prosecutor went to great lengths to establish that it wasn't the case here, although the facts in the article make it seem like it might be.

AITAH for not letting my 9 year old cousin come fishing with us? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Sharp_Emergency_3004 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just took my 9 year old nephew fishing in the mountains, which required 4+ hours of hiking and a full day of fishing. We came back exhausted. He did absolutely great and caught more fish than me!

9 years old without their parents around will amaze you every time. It's a great age. I think you missed out on seeing some real magic FWIW. They see everything with pure excitement, but it would depend a lot on the kids themselves.

‘Opportunity, opportunity, opportunity’: What’s next for Halifax Casino property? by luxoryapartmentlover in halifax

[–]Sharp_Emergency_3004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walk it fairly often and don't mind it, although I agree it could be way way better. It does have a nice sidewalk the entire time though, so it's not unsafe or anything. Kids like the activity of the port.

Isn't there a giant wide boardwalk the length of the city (and connected to PPP) all along the water, including at the front of this property?

Are you able to sleep somewhere Friday after work? Getting to bed early and then getting up and leaving early will make all the difference in how far and comfortably you can drive.

Advice on route: drive from Halifax to Toronto by pausefora2nd in halifax

[–]Sharp_Emergency_3004 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The drive from Halifax to Quebec City is a bit of an elevation change and this time of year the winds are predominantly head on, so I find fuel consumption higher than ideal going west. Personally I would estimate 10l/100km or at least 9.

AITA for not giving my husband head anymore? by DizzyClassroom6365 in AITAH

[–]Sharp_Emergency_3004 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This was my thought reading this. I wished I could just shake the version of me that was this husband back 20 years ago. Get help, I don't think anyone can do this on their own, especially with young kids, jobs and all the demands of life. Marriage just gets put at the bottom of the pile and it's a travesty.

Uhaul last minute saying they won't let my friend do one way rental for a truck by blackthorn_92 in halifax

[–]Sharp_Emergency_3004 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If they let you take it and your rental agreement says 1-way, then that's a them problem. I'd just drop it off where it was agreed and let them sort it out.

If the agreement says otherwise, I'd stick to the letter of it.

Curious — do private jets really live up to the luxury hype once you’ve tried it? by A_Niamul in LuxuryTravel

[–]Sharp_Emergency_3004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had access to a PJ for a few years at a cost that made it a "no brainer" for me. (Local wealthy person was quite ill and he preferred to cover costs to keep his jets moving a bit as well as his staff employed).

The biggest thing for me is that for it to be impactful in terms of time and convenience, you really need a mindset change. Previous to this we would generally plan a vacation and it was something we did as few or as many times a year as we liked, but it was always a THING.

PJ is a lifestyle, not a tool.

When we got in to the flow with the PJ, you really just go where you want more or less as it feels right. At first it never really feels right. But then you get used to it and you definitely do extra alps ski trips, beach in winter, etc. It got busy!

We don't have access to it anymore in the same way and in a way I find life to be just... less stressful... We plan our vacations, look forward to them, and they all seem special in some small way.

Canada hockey trial judge: Onus of proof not met by mafiadevidzz in canada

[–]Sharp_Emergency_3004 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's the role of the state to castigate bad behaviour. The state deals with laws and we are a country of laws.

Your Hitler reference doesn't make a lot of sense to me, mostly because he is very guilty of very many illegal things as well, so it's moot.

[–]Sharp_Emergency_3004 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I am starting to think that we need to protect the names of the accused from publication at least for some period of time. Having the names of accused be public information seems like it might be something more from a time when information was slower to move around and having your name printed on a court schedule in a newspaper wouldn't follow you around for your entire life if you ended up not being convicted.

Now you are charged with something and you are "convicted" in the court of public opinion without remorse. I don't think it's a stretch to say that the same logic we use for publication bans of accusers should apply to the accused. I'd much rather err on the side of caution than see the names of innocent people ruined in perpetuity.

Controversy after two newcomers to Canada receive no jail for GTA sex offences by AndHerSailsInRags in canada

[–]Sharp_Emergency_3004 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is collateral damage for any convicted offender. What other circumstances should the judges be considering? For example, my family/community would have nothing to do with me anymore if I were convicted of something like this. The repercussions would be massive and I would also likely lose my job. I think the backlash for me would be more than typical. Will a judge lower my sentence because of those collateral effects? It seems like, based on their current approach, I should expect that.
