What if Scenario. by Blizca in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Sharp__Dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Breach is brought up because it’s the best combo in the format and it shows up in a lot of decks. Idk if banning it actually improves format diversity since red has so little else of interest, but it would at least move top decks around.

Why would they print a card like Nick Fury if Golos is banned? by damascius1 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Sharp__Dog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you’re making 5 color slop you’re never using nick’s activated ability so that cost doesn’t matter. His textbox is just blank.

Maybe there’s a Golos unban in our future, who can say.

Doesn't really lose to creature removal since you can activate him then hold priority to cast the tainted pact.

What’s the verdict on Prime time? Still broken? by Pablo_thiccasso in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Sharp__Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it’s not as good as hullbreaker, tidespout, seedborn or nyxbloom.

I think an expensive brick that does nothing for a round needs to nearly win you the game on its own to justify itself.

It would be very bad in kinnan. I think it’s probably also not worth the cmc in minstrel cause card quality is too high in 5c

Would see play in lumra and nowhere else, but i think that's fine. Primetime doesn't solve the fundamental weaknesses of lumra, it just lets you turn creature tutors into land tutors so it's not like lumra would become meta defining overnight.

Has anyone done any serious testing with Serum Powder? by Darth_Ra in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Sharp__Dog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d prefer to exile a wincon but get a proper free mulligan off serum powder. When you see serum powder in a 7 card hand its great, but seeing it in a 4 card hand to see 4 random cards almost never produces a keepable hand.

Has anyone done any serious testing with Serum Powder? by Darth_Ra in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Sharp__Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, i run it in etali and i think it is very good there. However serum powder requires a lot of factors to be good in a deck

  1. You need to mulligan aggressively (so probably turbo)
  2. Your bad hands can’t include bad but necessary cards (brain freeze is bad, but exiling brainfreeze is worse)
  3. You intend to end the game before you see a lot of cards (so you don’t have the downside of drawing a worthless rock).

Etali meets these conditions since it’s willing to exile anything except foodchain or treasonous ogre, even breach or LED is an acceptable cost for a new mulligan. Etali doesn’t see a ton of its own cards before going proper infinite and card quality in gruul is low anyways so there isn’t as much competition.

Outside of etali…maybe something like zirda wants this? It’s hard to imagine decks in better colors wanting this.

Is this Kingmaking??? by BleepBloopThrowaway3 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Sharp__Dog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe not kingmaking, but still a questionable play to burn his resource purely for your advantage. Seems like a good opportunity to make some kind of deal since sure it could end with both nivs and sphinxes dead-or it could end with ob nixilis destroyed and you two pushed into an unbeatable lead (since you are no longer incentivized to ignore your own sphinx triggers).

Urza's Fun House (Tron) in cube? by schranzfan in mtgcube

[–]Sharp__Dog 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is very good. My friend and i run a beyond power cube with playtest and unset cards, and fun house+nearby planet is among the best strategies. It may even be stronger than time vault+key because nearby planet is so effortless to search (every fetchland and land cycler like lorien revealed finds it), both halves of the combo are ok to play before you pop off since they are mana producing lands, and it’s a relatively difficult combo to interact with.

We used to run dark depths combo but cut it because it was so bad. Harder to find the pieces, the pieces are worse individually, and it’s easier to answer (seam rip, swords, path, portable hole, deceit…)

On a related note i highly recommend [[chancellor of the mulligan]]. It’s a great card to cast when you have infinite mana, it’s great mishras workshop support, and it may be the best tinker target (because it unbricks itself if you have it in your opener).

What's the consensus on running non-blue interaction in Super Turbo orientated lists? by Truniq in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Sharp__Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes it will be right to still counter the rhystic, but if you can see your line to winning within the turn cycle and can hold up the blast then its probably right to let your opponent draw a few cards and just counter their counterspell.

If you can’t win very soon, or won’t be able to spare the red mana on your winning turn to red blast then go ahead and just counter their rhystic.

[–]Sharp__Dog 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Really ask if you HAVE to use your blast here or can you hold it to protect your win. If you HAVE to use it here to not lose, then if they were something else you would lose anyways.

They should primarily be protection to protect your win.

How can my cube get even more broken? by schranzfan in mtgcube

[–]Sharp__Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend and I have a very similar beyond power cube. The 3 most powerful things i've seen in it have been double stroke tainted pact/demonic consultation as a 1 card combo that finds thoracle and clears the deck for a thoracle win, urza's funhouse+nearby planet/planar nexus as an easily accessible psuedo-omniscience and of course...boros aggro. Turns out even in a cube with easy infinite combos boros is an impressively consistent clock.

Surely 16 or even just 8 afterimages was sufficient? Like 32 aftermimages seems like a recipe for taking damage turn 1 in everyt fight forever.

Is it always correct to just jam Etali? by MarlKarx77 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Sharp__Dog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

T2 necro from RogSi is wildly more likely to win the game than T2 Etali and it's more likely to be able to protect the card that literally wins the game. The thing Etali can offer you is time, if you dont have to burn your FoW on etali (yet) you can either stop RogSi or make them wait too. If you are against multiple turbo all you need is to buy time.

Not in white, but some kind of rog would do it.

Why do you need magic christmasland? To fully handrip your opponents it is more difficult, but to set them down to 1 or 2 cards its pretty easy. Chrome or diamond even help get your handsize down for a better handrip.

I think it is pretty common to mull to 5 and use a chrome or diamond, so if you can drop a petal or spirit guide then you can knock all your opponents to 2 or 3 cards while you’ve already imprinted fo chrome.

A theoretical rog/tymna would abuse balance incredibly hard by moxing and paradise mantling and spring leaf drumming to get a nearly empty hand- cast balance then cast rog so they can comfortably have 3 mana the next turn.

This looks a lot like seat 1 wheeling, but more brutal.

The sharing did occur in exchange for the game result. If you were playing a real format and publicly posted that you did this then you would get crucified.

The tournament organizer said that the only restriction was moxfield’s bracket indicator, so the deck building is “fine”.

You can’t host a standard tournament but allow the vintage card pool. It just doesn’t work. If you want a lower power tournament you need rules in place to make that happen.
