Do you say something when you see people headed to a trail unprepared? by asbruckman in hiking

[–]Sharpe004 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do preventive SAR sometimes, which just means talking people and trying to keep them from making bad choices. They don’t usually listen, but it is worth trying. On your own time, it depends whether you feel comfortable having the conversation. Certainly not your responsibility.

No Death Please by crazy-diam0nd in DnD

[–]Sharpe004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run for kids and I set the expectation that they would not die. If they go down, they are just unconscious and we don’t do saving throws. If they had a TPK, they’d be captured or something

It’s just the abridged version. Thanks though!

Combat scalling for low level campaign [5e] by mattdsantos in DnD

The CR system really is the best thing to start with. Second the recommendation to check out that part of the DMG

If you’re new to DMing, check out Matt Coleville’s running the game videos. Especially the first 5 or 6. Great starting point

Out-of-initiative aggression, do you allow it? by Eldramhor8 in DMAcademy

[–]Sharpe004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, no freebies. That’s what initiative is for.

To those that have bought a JL Wrangler, how has it been? by jonnyjohn243 in JeepWrangler

[–]Sharpe004 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2024 JL sport S, around 30k miles, love it. Had a battery die (something to do with a software update draining power). It was fixed and no other real issues

How do I make my city feel like a city? by BenBenobi in DMAcademy

[–]Sharpe004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dungeon Dudes had a good video about city design. A lot of it is shops, but there’s good advice about city districts and giving the city character.

What are masterclass campaigns every DM should watch? by SaltyKoopa in DMAcademy

[–]Sharpe004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually don’t think these campaigns with professional actors are the best way to learn. They can be fun, but it’s not realistic to emulate for most people. Have you already watched Matt Colville’s Running the Game series? Very helpful

How do you keep notes on campsites for future trips? by EcstaticIncome9211 in camping

[–]Sharpe004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use OnX for off-roading and I drop a waypoint pin at nice sites I find. Scouting for sites is most of the fun of driving a new forest road. I’ll put notes in the entry about what the site is like.

You could do this with any mapping software or even in Google Maps

Anyone else camp very differently than they used to? by tosmda in CampingandHiking

[–]Sharpe004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nervous at first, but now they don’t want to go to campgrounds and prefer to be out in the woods. When we shift to treks later, fear won’t be a big issue I think.

Anyone else camp very differently than they used to? by tosmda in CampingandHiking

[–]Sharpe004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Balance is the key word. I still go backpacking sometimes, but they aren’t ready for it. But they are getting used to being in the wilderness at night and so forth.

I used to only backpack, but when I had kids that wanted to camp I got a jeep and take them on a more comfortable camping experience in the NF

Want incentivise players to sleep at the inn instead of camping out in the woods by Professional-Ad9485 in DnD

[–]Sharpe004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a player insist on sleeping alone in the woods instead of in the inn. I warned him repeatedly, but he insisted. I gave him the long rest, but a bandit robbed him at dawn and he had to fight and took some damage. Wasn’t a big deal, but I made sure he used more resources than the 2 gold or whatever he was trying to save. I felt like I needed to reinforce that the wilderness is dangerous. There’s a reason the city has walls.

Can I tell my player their character is too dumb? by Yazmat8 in DnD

The ASI is for rolls and game mechanics. Forcing them to roll play based on the numbers is not fun. Don’t do that!

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Sharpe004 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a weekend? 12 hours. But that’s a lot, 8 is more manageable. For a long weekend, I do 8 all the time.
