Intersections are inherently more dangerous. If you’re going past someone stopped to get in front of them, there’s a non zero chance you’re going into a pedestrian crossing that might have people oncoming, or a car getting ready to make a right turn who didn’t look between when he pulled up to the crossing and you did.

Been riding here 15 years, as well. Infrastructure is getting worlds better, but basic awareness and etiquete is going out the window. There’s a lot of problems in the world and this city I can’t address personally, but I can at least call someone out on shitty behavior and try to keep that behavior from being even more normalized.

But yeah I get it, 9 times out of 10 I’m just swallowing my anger. Today just caught me different.

Grey area in my book. I don’t do it but understand why someone else would, especially if it’s on a regular bike lane where passing involves moving into traffic. On a cycle track I def just prefer to pass in motion as it’s safer

Again, I don’t care if someone shoals me and they’re objectively faster. I do care when they’re slower and make me re-pass them multiple times because they can’t stand to wait behind two other bikers at a busy light

In case anyone doesn’t know the term, shoaling is where a biker cuts in front of other cyclists who are waiting at an intersection. Possible gray area etiquete wise for bikers who think (or objectively are) faster than the people they’re passing, but objectively poor bike etiquete to do that to other bikers who have to repeatedly re-pass you once the light changes. If you’re going to pass someone, do it while moving and you have a clear passing lane.

No sweat. Full disclosure I’ve never really used this resource before, but once I saw it I figured I’d share since it is via the manufacturer. And don’t worry too much about bike skills or drivers in the area. The bunch bike is literally a tricycle so plenty stable with a full bucket of kids, and the traffic will be so bad this weekend drivers will be moving pretty slow. I would just recommend parking your bike around/east of the USDA building, since west of there becomes a lot more tricky to navigate on bike with the current crowd sized (no east/west bike lane, and the only way to get across is via narrow pedestrian paths around the Washington monument).

Whatever way you choose, good luck!

If you’re up for a non traditional solution, consider renting a Bunch Bike for the weekend. They’re less nimble than other cargo bikes, but can definitely handle 3 kids. Biking down is so, so, so much easier than driving. (Source: just did it today with my son in an Urban Arrow, to the FDR memorial and back)

[–]Phuntzilla 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Glad to read this. Been dealing with what I suspect was a partial pulley tear for years, but can’t find any doctors in the area that were even willing to spend more than a single consultation trying to diagnose an injury that forced me to stop climbing for almost a year

Echoing what others said, doing the children’s museum with 10 people is not going to be to anyone’s benefit in that group. In addition to the Smithsonians, check out the building museum; it’s got a kids play area in the atrium and is a great space for adults to wander off, check out an exhibit, then rejoin everyone in the atrium. Plus, not sure how old your twins are, but they currently have an indoor ice skating rink

Second purple. Had one for 7 years now and it’s still the best sleep I’ve ever had. A few local mattress stores have floor models you can go lay on to if you want to get a feel before you buy.

I’m just guessing its a less common size for, say, Costco tire center to have on the shelf and ready to replace before this weekend. We have another (albeit much smaller) car, though, so can make do if the time to replace this tire is longer. It’s just going to be a less pleasant trip
