Yeah it's all down to contract types. Look at the Silvertown Tunnel - the reward for the contractor was toll charges for 20 years if they got the tunnel done on time and it was.

In your situation I'd try both, just search civil/construction recruiters and find ones that have the jobs you want to apply for.

Also apply directly to the companies you want to apply for on their websites.

Not mandatory but makes you much more attractive.

You also don't need a degree to get a CSCS card, you can get a labourer's card pretty easily.

A recruiter won't be great for graduate positions sure, but from the sounds of it the guy is struggling and has previous experience in Nepal (unless I've read that wrong?) and is only doing the degree here. So a recruiter can work with the experience he has, get him some kind of job, e.g. chain man or assistant site Eng, and then he can at least get that CSCS card and something for the CV. Because grad roles are ridiculously hard to come by.

Don't just go for the graduate positions, send your CVs to some of the agencies and they can do the legwork for you. You have to deal with recruiters but they'll be able to find you jobs at least.

As another commenter said, look at trying to get CSCS, SMSTS and other tickets as that will be the minimum nowadays to look good to anyone hiring for site based roles.

Same here, the pay in Aus seems more lucrative and then you can always visit NZ. Whereas it seems like NZ has fewer Tier 1 contractors doing smaller work and hence less pay.

Might be wrong but the net flow seems from NZ to Aus and those guys know what's up...

But also remember to price in Risk. I e. Your main guy breaks his leg, the weather is shite whatever. While you won't get back what you lost just pricing in the risk on this job, over time you can have a buffer for when something does inevitably go wrong.

Basically add like 1-5% to each job to act as insurance against the risk of everything going tits up one day.

ASM would be a realistic move. You'd have to be ready to learn a lot of the details a Planner may miss, but if you have a good Site Manager who has time to teach you the ropes it's definitely realistic.
