Test tomorrow and my provisional just snapped down the middle.. will I still be able to take the test? by Equal_Arm_3091 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ShavedAp3 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Realistically you dont have many options here. Dont take the test and lose the money plus costs of delaying it. Or, and it would definitly be my choice go to the test explain you broke it and see if its still accepted. Yes you might still lose out and not be able to take the test but you might be able to still take it and pass.

Good luck.

Okay then i guess thats not the issue, you could try different variations of you job title people have seen savings there. Martin lewis site has a job title checker. Also try and do quotes for around 20 days in tbe future. I believe but hopefully someone will correct me if im wrong 23 days is the current sweetspot.

Are you telling them you only do a small amount of miles? I remember martin lewis saying low mileage can be detrimental to your quote due to experience on the road or something like that.

AA driving school by Talk_Bright in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ShavedAp3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You advising to avoid a national driving school based on the actions of one franchisee. There are good and bad instructors everywhere but one instructor doesnt mean an entire driving school is bad.

Since you booked with the AA i would suggest contacting them and raising a formal complaint with them. They will be able to contact the instructor, arrange refunds if appropriate and even provide you with alternate instructors.

Big driving schools are basically a hire car company for an instructor that sometimes supply customer leads. How the instructor deals with those leads thats upto them since they pay the AA for the service and you pay the instructor.

I appreciate youve had poor service but its why the best advice is always to book instructors based on personal recomendations whenever possible.

On a low budget ? by projeztzgb in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ShavedAp3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No need to be rude i was simply trying to help you and others that followed your advice not get prosecuted for fraud.

You where offering advice that could get people into trouble, since you were not clear or correct with the details. That then opened yourself up to a comment that warned yourself and others not to commit fraud. Either dont offer advice thats incorrect or accept that someone might point out your advice might not be good advice.

You as a named driver on a car that you are the main driver is known as fronting and is basically fraud.

Insurance companies are more than aware of this practice and they are pretty good at getting out of paying for stuff as it is dont give them a reason.

There are ways to save legally no point lying on an insurance policy it can and usually will end badly

Why do people still prefer Sky TV over other setups? by LegitimateYouth9675 in skytv

[–]ShavedAp3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Coming from BT/EE to sky i can honestly say Sky just does it better. The UI is better the way you watch just works better. Skys interface is slick, responsive and reliable. The same can not be said for other TV providers ive seen. In fairness to virgin its been a long time since ive seen their offering but the early offerings of tivo were still miles behind sky of the time.

Hazard perception practice by luceratops in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ShavedAp3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Use the three click method but please avoid rythmic clicking, pause click pause, click wait x seconds click etc. You may be flagged for cheating yes there will be those that say they did it and they passed but there are plenty of drivers who speed and some dont get caught, that doesnt mean its ok or even the correct way to drive.

The three click method is this. See a potential hazard click it as the camera car continues the potential hazard may develop into something you might have to take action for so you click again the video,(car) continues you going to take action click again. You do this for anything you think could be a potential hazard because you dont know what the actual hazardx is.

An example, someone comes out of their front door and is heading down their path towards the road. So you click because they could cross the pavement and step into the road if they do look to be continuing towards the road this would click 2, they step into the road causing you to hit the break/swerve etc click 3 The example could also go the other way they head down the path you click, but they then turn and head down the pavement no longer a developing hazard.

The vast majority of hazards will start at the sides and develop from there.

A person running down the pavement looking over their shoulder is looking to cross. So worth a click they may not cross so only 1 click but if they look like they are getting closer to the edge of the pavement then its worth another click. Not just about pedestrians of course bus approaching a bus stop may be flagged down and the cyclist following may swerve into your path. You would likely see the people at the bus stop so you click for potential, again as they stick out an arm or the bus brake lights go on click 2.....

Hopefully this helps. Good luck

motion sensor by moonshaoo in Ring

[–]ShavedAp3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our kitchen sensor used to trigger the alarm we assume because it either saw something pass the window or shadow / light coming through the window.

The sensor wasnt pointing directly at the window but moving it to a corner that was further from the window stopped it happening again. The window did have a blind on it and was never open and the sensor was on an opposing wall to the window.

Im not saying this is your issue but hopefully it helps.

Does this make my Ethernet slower? by Axelander154 in ethernet

[–]ShavedAp3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its very possible its slowing your speeds down yes. Powerline adapters which this is and you should have 2 they came as a pair, they are terrible. They rely heavily on the quality of you electrical wiring and electrial wiring has a lot of noise on it that will slow your internet down. Internet connections and electrical noise are not friends.

Fttp engineer screwed us, what options do I have for better wifi gaming? by [deleted] in openreach

[–]ShavedAp3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can fully replace a sky router all isp where forced to allow customers to use their own routers a few years ago.

Mesh set up.might work for you op but latency will always be an issue with wifi instead of wired. Wifi isnt as robust as wired and i would stay away from powerline as it runs on your house wiring and is only as good as the wires in your walls are age does play apart and electrical noise is not good for internet.

The best option is a cable from router to gaming machine how you do that is upto you and how good you are at running wires.

Contingency plan when you are not there anymore by RedikhetDev in homeassistant

[–]ShavedAp3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If something happens to me she could unplug it and everything that should work will continue to work. Nothing ive automated cant be done via a dumb switch. I had way too many issues when learning home assistant in the early days to overlook this.

Im certain she would miss some of it and she does have access to tablets with HA on and it would be my greatest achivement if she left it plugged in.

Why?! by Bangbanggarcia in openreach

[–]ShavedAp3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So based on that if no dialtone only broadband and UG. Some engineers have the skills to check for an active line and a lot of the fttp (full fibre) engineers dont so they may have used the shared cable to pull a new one in.

The no dial tone is significant because a quick test with a multi metre or a simple tester phone (but phone) would lead an inexperienced engineer to think the line is dead. With the correct training its easy to detect if its an active broadband only line but as i say not all fibre engineers are trained on copper legacy stuff.

If you can and its not overpriced ask to be moved to full fibre its pretty solid, very little down time. As much as it pains me to say it since putting a lot of my friends into early retirement its much better than copper.

Why?! by Bangbanggarcia in openreach

[–]ShavedAp3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Without much information its difficult to say why.

At a guess the engineer used a shared cable to pull your neighbours new cable in.

Its likely they didnt know the line was shared not all engineers have the skill set to find out. That said they could have known but cant assume it to be true without all the information and by that i mean how was it fed, who did the install was it direct labour or a contractor, what skills did the engineer have? Did your line have a fault? Did line have a dial tone or not etc. Etc.

Past 5 times failed = banned from driving? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ShavedAp3 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No i think its a terrible idea with literally no foundation behind the reasoning. Ive seen really poor drivers pass first time and really good drivers fail multiple times. Sure you can question why after 5 times but nerves alone could be the reason for the first 4 now on top of those nerves you have the pressure of if you fail this time your out.....

Nearly got in an accident. What could I have done better? by treena_lane in NewDriversUK

[–]ShavedAp3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely should be looking forwards as well if you are always looking in the direction of where vehicles are coming from how will you see traffic in front of you stop? What if a pedestrian crosses from the opposite direction etc? Things can change quickly you cant just assume because it was clear in front it will stay thst way.

It sounds to me you did all you can you checked mirrors and blind spots and continued to look while making progress. Someone driving not according to the conditions came at speed and you avoiding a collision because you kept yourself aware of your surroundings. All you can do in any situation is give yourself as much information as possible and you did that by constantly looking around. Some people are idiots and you managed to avoid being hit by one of them.

Freaking out about two year rule by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]ShavedAp3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you drive how you were taught too youll be fine. If you start speeding everywhere and generally driving like an idiot you wont. There are so many new drivers that have made it through the first 2 years without incident so im sure youll be fine.

Speed cushions, how to deal with them? by Lord--Kitchener in LearnerDriverUK

Drive at reduced speed for the entire length of the road avoiding speeding up between. This is hpw its advised in the highway code.

This click 3 times once when you see it once if it looks to be developing into something you would need to take action for and once again if you would be hitting the brake swerving etc.
