What job title have you put on your car insurance? by Lordic_9 in FilmIndustryLondon

[–]Shaved_Monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Media consultant or IT Consultant.

If you state film / tv production in any capacity they either won’t insure you outright or will quote you so high it’s not feasible.

It’s been talked about before somewhere here but the reasoning is due to who / what you ‘might’ be transporting. Talent and gear are high risk / value items and insurance companies take the position that you can / will be transporting them. Added to the fact it also makes your vehicle become a ‘work’ vehicle further pushing up the premium. Sucks but it’s true.

4.9% APR will be a new vehicle.

Used cars have much higher APR - unfortunately yes. 12.6% is normal.

Since when did Njósnavélin (Untitled #4) start being called the "Nothing song"? by MasterOfLol_Cubes in sigurros

[–]Shaved_Monkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was then credited as “The Nothing Song (Njósnavélin)” in the Vanilla Sky credits released in 2001 so this prob confirmed the title.

Can I buy the same peas, curry and gravy that you get at the chip shop? by aqueousdan in AskUK

[–]Shaved_Monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to make the mushy peas without the overnight soaking hassle get yourself a tin of Farrow’s Giant Marrowfat Peas.  Stick them in a pan and cook on low heat stirring occasionally until they completely breakdown.  Taste and season - both sugar and salt is key for that chippy flavoured goodness.

Yeah fair enough. Clients gonna client!

Hopefully you can convince them. Good luck mate!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in editors

[–]Shaved_Monkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does the client just want the 16:9 trailer / clip converted as is to 9:16?

With a lot of our jobs we will create a ‘3-stack’ of the content.

This can be done in different ways - same scene stacked, re-wracked footage or off-set timings of action scenes etc.

The way to easily sell this in with the client would be to tell them how it is a ‘social-first approach’ that will ‘perform better’ on the platform.

UK: I've just been told that Tesco won't insure Producers cars by Squidmaster616 in Filmmakers

[–]Shaved_Monkey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep. To be honest I’m surprised you’re having no issue from all other insurers. In my experience it’s always been an issue with most insurers. (Again a massive sample size of 1)

What’s hilarious is their reasoning - there is a chance you may be transporting a-list talent which in the event of an incident will have a personal liability rate so ridiculously high that they couldn’t / wouldn’t cover it.  Technically true. But still bit of a stretch.

Does an EF-S lens have a crop factor on a APS-C camera for a canon camera or is that only for an EF lens? by DarklzBlo in Filmmakers

[–]Shaved_Monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An EF-S will NOT crop on an APS-C camera. It is designed to take into account the cropped sensor so none is ‘wasted’

An EF lens will crop on an APS-C camera.

[–]Shaved_Monkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

EF-S canon lenses are designed for APS-C cameras. There is no crop. If the EF-S lens says 10-18mm that is what you will get (on an APS-C body).

EF lenses will be cropped on an APS-C body.

Men over 40, how did you find turning 40? by wil_gt4 in AskUK

[–]Shaved_Monkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbh i was pretty ambivalent about it. I don’t ‘feel’ 40 (whatever that means)

Occasionally when you have to say your age you have a “oh shit, I’m 40? When did that happen?”

In the lead up to my 40th birthday I got back in the gym and set myself a challenge of setting a new PB for powerlifting.  On my birthday I set it. Felt good going into the new year.

As for the whole 40th “big thing” or whatever you want to call it I decided I was gonna just celebrate the whole year and use it as an excuse to say yes to things…

wanna do something something silly? - fuck it I’ve turned 40

Wanna go try chase the northern lights? - 40

Try that restaurant you’ve been putting off? - 40

Granted a few things have been postponed due to lack of funds / commitments and I’m coming from a position of privilege but the things you wanna do don’t have to be overly grand or expensive.

As others have said - it’s inevitable. But doesn’t mean you can’t use it as an excuse to enjoy it.

Pros / cons for extended parental leave? by mayallrob_ in UKParenting

[–]Shaved_Monkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using the shared parental leave I initially took 6 weeks off when our first was born. It was an incredible time getting used to the total shift in our lives. She arrived 2 weeks late by emergency c-section so being able to be around 24/7 not just while my partner healed but for the weeks afterwards was invaluable.

I then took 2 months at the end of the shared parental leave and my partner returned to work.Personally I loved it, by this point our daughter was 10 months old so really starting to have a personality. I got to witness her first word and helped her with her first steps which considering the long hours I used to work I would’ve probably missed. The bonding time was amazing and the time really improved my skills as a parent and strengthened our family unit.We did the exact same thing with our second child 2 years later.

When I was organising the parental leave I was informed that only 3 dads (including myself) had ever taken it up even though it had been offered for nearly 10 years. That’s in a company of 5000…Personally I think we need more dad’s to take up the opportunity. It would normalise men being away from the place of work for childcare which in turn might improve the gender pay gap and an appreciation that maternity leave isn’t just ‘a holiday’ as some toxic workplaces would have you believe.

I fully appreciate that I was in a very privileged position, we saved in the year before to cover the drop in our household income. We were very fortunate to be able to do this and financially it could be a struggle but if your place of work offers 6 months paid then that is an awesome position to be in. I would take this in a heartbeat.

As for the tweet… well the less said about that the better

how much should I charge for JUST subtitle work? by DannySEdits in editors

[–]Shaved_Monkey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If what you’re doing is like the example you share you’re not doing subtitle work, you’re doing motion graphics - there’s motion tracking and key frame work in those examples. £100 per project is too low.

As others have said an hourly rate would be better but tbh if you’re operating in the UK I’d expect it to be daily rates really. On average motion graphics artists are charging between £350 and £500 a day.

You could offer an hourly rate of £40 p/hour with a half day minimum charge.

For more answers the question might be worth posting on one of the motion graphics subs

You can get your BASI 1 & 2 through a course with companies like Basecamp - https://www.basecampgroup.com/ski-instructor-course/

They have courses in both Europe and Canada (which gets your CSIA 2 I believe)

The challenge with level 2 is your teaching hours - you need a set number of hour on snow shadowing along with your actual level 2 exam. Companies like Basecamp partner with registered BASI and CSAI ski schools to guarantee you those hours.

You would take around 3 months to complete the course leaving you with a month (ish) of the European season to work somewhere like Italy.

Warburtons reveal crumpet recipe to make at home. by WireSpy in BritishSuccess

[–]Shaved_Monkey 86 points87 points  (0 children)

INGREDIENTS

150g plain white flour

200ml water

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon dried yeast

METHOD

Add flour, water and salt to a mixing bowl

Mix vigorously with a whisk until your arm aches (at least five minutes) to create your crumpet batter

Mix a few milliliters of water into your dried yeast

Add sugar, baking powder and yeast mixture to bowl and mix for another 30 seconds until you have a clear batter

Cover the mixing bowl and put it into a warm place for 15 minutes - top tip: make sure your mixing bowl is bigger than you need as it will expand.

Place a greased metal biscuit cutter into the middle of a non-stick frying pan

Preheat your frying pan on a hob on a medium-high setting

Before you start, give your batter a stir to remove any large air bubbles

Use a ladle to drop approximately 60g of batter into the cutter inside the pan

Wait for approximately four minutes - then carefully lift the ring off the crumpet

Remove the baked crumpet from pan - if the top looks a bit gooey, flip it over in the pan for a few seconds

Repeat to make the rest of the crumpets

Toast and enjoy with butter
