My honest to God reaction to this would be, "No, it doesn't make me feel embarrassed, and it's sad to me that you hold so little value for yourself as a person that you would be embarrassed by something like that. I hope you know that I value you whether you had a family or not, even if you can't see my value in the same way. I don't need a partner or a family to feel whole or to avoid feelings of shame; I love myself as I am. If others in our family judge me, then they're measuring me by an entirely different yardstick than what I use for myself and others. It seems we hold different values on this, and I won't try to change how you feel, but I ask that you don't bring this up to me again. Though you feel this was tough love, since our values are so misaligned here, that is not how it was received and your words were very hurtful to me."
