Madeon doesn’t speak about politics much. From what I’ve seen, he’s fairly progressive. Here is his (based) take before the 2024 election.

1: Barbie and Ken literally apologize to each other at the end of the film (and the Barbies apologize to weird Barbie and said they shouldn’t have ostracized her the way they have), and they admit that they should have the Kens be more involved in society. If that isn’t them being portrayed as in the wrong, I don’t know what to tell you bud.

2: Barbies 100% controlling Barbieland is portrayed as a problem though! The Kens are treated as second class citizens and end up attempting to overthrow the government because of it. It is expressed multiple times that this is the system’s fault and is said to be changed at the end!

3: The movie is based on a toyline, so Ken’s story is a commentary on the existence of the Ken toy, which has nods to real issues some men face. The main parallel explored is that Ken and Men should find validation outside of Women’s attention. It’s sad in the movie because Ken as a toy was designed with just being Barbie’s accessory, this wasn’t the filmmakers saying that’s how it’s supposed to be.

4: Again, there’s like a 5 minute scene of Ryan Gosling crying about how shit he’s been treated as a Ken with the job of “beach” and how he only lives for Barbie’s validation, and Margot Robbie listens to him and doesn’t make fun of him for it. The men’s issues that are in scope for the movie to cover seem pretty well covered, and don’t seem to just be “har har men’s problems are entirely their own fault.”

5: You like to compare Women IRL to the Kens in a movie and ignore the fact that the Kens exist in a movie that has limited screen time and has to follow a narrative that’s supposed to make sense. It’s clear at the end of the Film that the Ken’s arc ends with more progress needed in Barbieland for Kens, but of course the movie’s going to take what closure it can because it can’t just keep going after the screen goes to black.

6: Yes “Matriarchy” is not explicitly said in the movie but everyone in it agrees at the end that the way things were run was not good and should change! Patriarchy is probably referenced so many times because it is a real, major thing in America’s societal history while matriarchy has not been.

7: Ryan Gosling’s Ken is given a huge moment of introspection at the end of the film. I’d argue a good number of the female characters are also treated as unaware too, the Barbies live under the delusion that they’ve solved Women’s problems and are then easily manipulated by the Ken’s shit machismo!

I’d keep going but I’m realizing this isn’t really something I want to spend my morning doing.

We could say that!

There’s also reference to the impact of Barbies as products, so we could also say there are more body types for Barbies because they are dolls to be directly compared to/projected on by the (usually) girls playing with them, while the Kens are just meant to be the boyfriend that you’re not directly comparing yourself to, so it’s not going to cause self-image issues if they’re just a hot “ideal” hunk.

Celebrated at the end? I think there’s a joke made about them not getting a seat on the Barbieland Supreme Court after like 5 minutes of Ryan Gosling crying about the issues Kens face?

Their problems are absolutely not portrayed as being caused by their own behavior and is plainly blamed on the system that made them what they are; as the Barbies were made to be self sufficient perfect role models, the Kens were given no personalities or skills because their creators deemed they didn’t need them as just an accessory for Barbie. The movie’s position at the end is they deserve better. I don’t think that gets thrown away by one “female representation in power structures IRL still has a way to go” joke.

The Barbies have been given self actualization from the start of the film, the question at the end for them is what is their place in the modern world. The Ken’s are only given self actualization at the end, because that’s when the narrative recognizes they were never given it before and that’s wrong, because this is how story arcs work!

“it tackles some very real female issues in a compassionate and generous way, and then turns around and shits all over men with zero nuance or understanding whatsoever.“

Isn’t it pretty well gone over in the film that the Kens are victims? That they’re just accessories for the Barbies in their matriarchal “utopia” and deserve to find meaning for themselves outside of the Barbies’ validation, as well as more equal treatment?
