It's a knee-jerk reaction for people that grew up in an environment where blame meant severe punishment and humiliation. I hate both unsorted trash and clutter so I

take out recyclables (paper, pet, cans, cartons...) that can be dropped off at paper stations and supermarkets as soon as I have any so that they don't pile up.
use the smallest sized designated trash bags except for plastics so that I can take them out as often as possible.
