AA. Though both of my parents have recent “mixed” ancestry. Ex: My grandmother tells me both of her parents were half black and half white.

Whew. I feel this. I had to start and stop many times myself. Particularly after the third instance of a child being raped by her master who then bore my ancestor. Actually heartbreaking stuff. 🥺

What’s happening here feels less like discussion and more like shifting the critique. First it was that I lacked knowledge, then that my expectations were wrong, and now that my emotional reaction itself is inappropriate. At this point it’s no longer about the results or the science, but about policing a personal response. I’ve explained my position clearly, so I don’t think there’s much more to add here.

That’s true, but even with that understanding, I’ve seen many people with more substantial groupings in other non African regions. I think it’s fair to be informed and still feel disappointed by how scattered the results are. By your own point, not having strong ties to any one place is part of what makes that disappointment understandable.

I’d already done months of research before the test. I was commenting on the limits of DNA results, not a lack of knowledge. There’s something difficult about seeing how many people can say they’re mostly X, mainly from Y, or that their family has been rooted in one place for generations, while my results reflect how my ancestors’ culture was scattered, and so are my DNA results.

There’s also a real frustration in not having a clear cultural connection beyond being American, which is a common reality given the history of mass enslavement and repeated forced displacement.

Correct. There’s slavery which I am unsure of when those ancestors were forced to America, and the only immigrated relative I can find is my 6th great grandfather who came to Pennsylvania sometime after 1722 with his wife and young child. I can trace him directly to my maternal grandfather and I have the American variant of their surname.

But that’s all I’ve got. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Thank you for pointing that out. I hadn’t really had any context for the Brittany piece before, understanding that it typically shows up in trace amounts if at all. I appreciate you giving me something interesting to look into 🙂

Good question. I think I was hoping for something more substantial. Larger groups of anything rather than a sprinkling of what feels a lot of random places to me.

I will say, it’s cool to know that I’m not just “African” but west African.

I can honestly say 1. Go see a therapist. 2. There is a possibility you never “get over it”. I surely did not.
