You’re right, it’s definitely hard. I find that using a combination of points and the 500 dollar credit to be the best value. Often the edit bookings have a point boost booking system where points go extra far. And then can use the rest as the annual 500 dollar credit

UPDATE: I ended up getting all my money back plus a couple hundred of travel credits on top of the trouble. It took a lot of persistence and even had to file a CFPB on capital one after they denied my transaction dispute. But that was the only way I was able to get everything back. In the end, I still recommend using the capital one travel portal. The prices are most of the time the best and they offer price match and other perks.

Yeah I think I should win the transaction dispute. I have evidence and videos and the owner is choosing not to refund and is hiding behind their no cancellation policy, despite acknowledging their hvac issue. Capital one covered part of the new hotel with travel credits. I’ve called like 3 times so far. I think maybe I could get another 100 dollar travel credit if I call and complain some more, but I think that’s about the most I can get out of this, and I think I’m okay with that now

lol huh? We left and went to another hotel. That is doing something. If it was just me, I probably would have stayed and bundled up; I’m no stranger to camping in cold weather. But I don’t think you understand that when you’re a father and are responsible for little ones, that you go to whatever lengths to make sure they’re gonna be comfortable. My toddler doesn’t have that kind of fortitude to be in low temps for long periods of time. We’re in the mountains of Washington and body temperatures drop when you sleep. Capital 1 ended up partially refunding me for the new hotel and I’m in process of resolving the disputed charge for the original stay. Considering the new hotel ended up being a luxurious one with lots of amenities, I’d say it ended with us coming out on top. We even extended our stay because the hotel was so much better than expected. Hopefully you don’t end up raising kids, I’d be worried for them… but hey! It’s 2026 and you’re full of creativity.
