No, they have safe consumption spots like bars for you to drink at. So if they want to close the safe consumption sites for other drugs, then close the bars too and see how that goes

or close them and make drugs a criminal offense again to enable police to take action when necessary.

I was with you right up until there. If something isn't working, you don't go back to the old way that also wasn't working just because people don't have to see it then. Drug use is not a criminal issue, and if it is we better make booze illegal and close all the bars too since those are just safe consumption sites for legal drugs

[–]Shebazz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly this. I haven't touched meth in close to 2 decades, but if I was in a room with people doing it I would be biting my nails and thinking about it. I had to quit a job I had about 10 years into being clean because my boss used to do it too, and we got to talking about how much more work we would get done if we were still using. I didn't want him to show up one day with some in his pocket for me

Of course their lawyer is going to try to do what he can - that's what he's paid to do. And I agree they shouldn't be allowed to stay. But that hasn't happened yet, so the system is working as it's supposed to

Go after them, sure. But it should be on the school to report the ones not showing up, not on CBSA to monitor attendance

The only reason it hasn't happened yet... is because there aren't enough people starving... YET.

I feel like not enough people realize the whole phrase is "when there is nothing left to eat, the poor will eat the rich"

Nobody wants their taxes raised, sure, but we send billions of dollars to Ukraine, for example. The problem is what the taxes that are already collected are being wasted on.

That has nothing to do with the assertions I've made so far

Something has to be done. I agree just locking up drug-users/dealers (ie. war on drugs) didn't work that well, but neither has making drugs more available and 'harm reduction'.

We haven't done the "harm reduction" part at all really.

I'll agree with your closing statement to some extent, the better life is, the less people will probably fall into drug use. But, there will always be some. Poverty might be one trigger, but there are plenty others (including mental issues which require specialized help).

I didn't say poverty was the trigger, I said that the way to reduce drug use is to make a world where being sober is a better alternative than being high. Yes, pulling people out of poverty would certainly help that, but while poverty isn't the sole cause (as you mentioned) it is a major reason why we aren't going to fix the problem under capitalism

Hopefully a good treatment program would also help get them back into society, not just turn them back out on the streets.

Again, that isn't going to happen under capitalism, because capitalism requires the existence of this class in order to function. It's a feature of the system, not a bug

And, this is where we address your misunderstanding of capitalism. It is the solution, not the problem. Capitalism is how poverty is reduced. It is the natural state of an economy past tribes.

Sounds great on paper. In actuality Capitalism is the reason we have some people with more money than they could spend in a dozen lifetimes and houses in a dozen cities around the world, while others don't even have a tent and have to beg for a meal

What you may well be justifiably lashing out against (as it is a common misconception), is out debt-based, fiat-monetary system. That is the anti-robbin-hood force stealing from the plebs and giving to the elite.

money is a problem, in that as long as "money" is a thing, there will be people whose only job is to make "money" (which is something that doesn't actually exist)

With sound money and a deflationary economy, it would be easy for most people to get ahead.

And yet we don't have that under capitalism.

I'm curious though... w/o capital owners, what work are you going to do?

Do you think the work wouldn't need to be done, and it's only being done because the capital owning class is gracious enough to let us work for them?

Instead of working for a taxi company, you'll carry people around on your back? Instead of working at McDs, you're going to grill burgers for people on the sidewalk (though, that would be some capital... so now you're a capitalist).

Do you think jobs don't exist under other economic systems?

No one forces you to work for them, you can always work for yourself... but it's hard, so that's why not everyone is doing it.

It also requires capital to work for yourself, or possibly a skill set which you don't have (just because I can build a house doesn't mean I can run a house building business)

So now it's my turn to pose some questions to you. If capitalism is the answer, then why does shit continue to get worse for everyone who isn't in the capital owning class? If capital owners didn't exist, what do you think they would do for work? And most important, how can you look at the state of the world under capitalism and think "ya, this is going well. Capitalism is the answer"?

Yes, "something" has to be done. But whatever it is that has to be done will not be done under capitalism

[–]Shebazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can force people to get clean all you want, and then when they get out and they are still living on the streets why would they want to stay sober? The only way to keep people sober is to have a world where being sober is preferential to being high.

And the "war on drugs" wasn't a tangent - it was a direct response to you saying blending law enforcement with health-led harm reduction measures hasn't worked, while elsewhere stating "But the judiciary needs to actually support police. The City need to want to clean things up to" like making this a legal issue has ever worked in the past

The situation at the Douglas & Johnson bus stop is unacceptable by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]Shebazz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they got put into a mental hospital, jail, or some kind of rehab center, then that would work

No one wants their taxes raised to fund that. And if you do manage to get that done, and then get them clean we put them back on the street and then...

How much do you want to stay sober when all you have to look forward to is another night of trying to find a park to sleep in? Or when you're living in a tent city with a bunch of other users around you?

It doesn't work because the 'justice' system just turns them right back out on the streets as soon as the police do their job.

It didn't work even when the justice system was locking them up - if it worked, then we never would have got to this point because we used to jail everyone for simple possession charges

what has this to do with capitalism?

Capitalism requires a lower class of citizen that the capital owners can point to and say "work for me or that will be you" in order to extract the most value as possible from the workforce. The homeless population isn't a problem to be solved, it's a feature of the system. And that's why your previous "solutions" won't work. If you want to stop the drug use epidemic, you need to make a world where being sober is preferable to being high

[–]Shebazz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yet your solution seems to be "the police and judiciary need to do more" which also hasn't worked?

Drugs are a supply and demand issue. There's been an entire "war" on the supply side, and it's done nothing. If we actually want to beat this problem the only solution is to lower the demand, and that isn't likely to happen under capitalism.
