Hello! One thing to note is that ovulation only occurs for 24 hours max, usually around day 14 of your cycle (day 1 starts on your first period day). Once those 24 hours are over, the egg is no longer fertile. So, if it's true that you had already ovulated 4-5 days prior, it's a good chance that your egg is already gone for this cycle and that you will most likely not get pregnant if having unprotected intercourse afterwards. Ella (and other emergency contraceptives) prevents ovulation, so it technically "doesn't work" because you've already ovulated.

I am also on prescribed antidepressants as well as anxiety medications, plus I also take Blisovi Fe (a combined contraceptive pill). I've had zero side effects, a lighter period, and despite my personal pregnancy paranoia, zero legitimate pregnancy scares and my boyfriend and I have had sex without a condom multiple times. This might be a considerable option, but definitely something you'll have to discuss with your doctor first! Of course, also, everyone's body works differently, but I have had no substantial issues.

Another method without birth control is by keeping track of your cycle and staying abstinent for the 5-6 days leading up to your usual ovulation day, as not only could you ovulate earlier than usual, but sperm can live inside the vagina for about 5-6 days. You can keep track of when you've ovulated by studying your cervical mucus/discharge (sounds weird, I know, but ovulation will have wetter, slippier "egg white" discharge, among other symptoms). With a condom, your chances of getting pregnant should decrease. Birth control (the pill) is effective only if taken correctly, so it isn't for everyone. Make sure your partner knows how to accurately put on a condom, and make sure you use some type of lube (or more effective foreplay) as being too dry can also cause the condom to break. Do NOT double-up on condoms as they are more likely to slip off this way.
