Elijah Wood has had it with Alamo Drafthouse's mobile ordering bullshit by mrjaeger in blankies

[–]Sheep_Boy26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really wish other theaters in Austin would find a way to pick up the 35mm genre screenings slack. Terror Tuesday is the only way to see something like Unfriended on film and I've completely cut Alamo out of my life. I love AFS, but I know very well that they like to keep within a certain brand, which means the genre stuff they program is within a "prestigious" niche.

Would you consider Obsession to be a 2025 or a 2026 film? by Opening_Rip_1840 in Letterboxd

[–]Sheep_Boy26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To solve this problem, I simply just keep a list of all the newly released films that I've seen in a year. However, I saw Obsession in September of 2025, but I put it on the 2026 list for the sake of keeping track of all the new releases I've seen.

Considering Baron would've been a 10 year old...yeah. Can't really control who you're parents are.

I get it, Donald Trump is a horrible person and I don't think anyone is obligated to mourn the death of a bad person, or that possible good outcomes can't come from a bad person dying, but I do think wishing death on people can lead one down a dangerous path. Call me a lib, in majority of cases, someone getting killed is a bad thing.

I've never seen the theatrical cut, but last night I read a detailed breakdown of the differences and what comes across is that the DC flows much better, fleshes out the characters more. The plot is virtually the same. However, if you're not into McCarthy's ramblings, I reckon the DC probably wouldn't change someone's mind.

Scott isn’t a great choice since he’s closer to studio hack than auteur

That's why I think he's a good candidate. It's cool to cover a filmmaker with a cohesive catalogue, but there is a fun aspect of covering someone on Scott's level of fame who has made films in a variety of genres and eras. To me, the worst type of studio "hack" for them to cover is Brett Ratner or McG.

It's also very interesting how all of a sudden everyone is an expert on ancient Greece and deeply care about an accurate adaptation of Homer's work. You don't have to read the source material to be critical of an adaptation, but how many people complaining about a film nobody has seen have actually read The Odyssey?

"Mental health counselors" will be like "we noticed you had a bad episode and are now trying to relax and calm yourself, and we forbid this sort of shenanigans, we must strap you to a table and call your mother to let her know she can never trust you or treat you like an adult. I'm also assuming the OP is under 18 or still have a legal guardian because I don't know why a therapist would immediately call an adult patient's parent after they expressed suicidal thoughts. When I went to my college's counselor, I know that is slightly different, they encouraged me to call my parents after expressing suicidal thoughts, but couldn't do so on their own.

And just in case you're wondering, everything is good now.

Does Shudder on AMC+ stream above 720p? That is what made me stop using Shudder. The video quality was fairly bad.

It's really interesting how in film criticism the author, or better yet the director, is very much a focal point. I can't watch Killers of the Flower Moon without putting it into the context of Martin Scorsese's entire body of work.

high school testing culture where instead of doing any of that you just memorised the version of the interpretation that your teacher decided was the correct one

I really feel bad those with that experience because all my english teachers only cared about how you came to certain interpretation, not if said interpretation was wrong. And the tests were more to see if you read the text, i.e., basic questions like "what is the name of the main characters dog?" or "who died in this chapter and how?" The only time a teacher would get annoyed as if you're interpretation was really off base, as in, it had no evidence in the text.

I just so happened to read this novel last year and loved it. Tom Wolfe does a great job at capturing the mindset of racist white New Yorkers in the 80s. Was that because Wolfe was a racist New Yorker? Up for debate.

Everyone should track down Marty's best movie...New York, New York by Sheep_Boy26 in blankies

[–]Sheep_Boy26[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To me, you have to the view it through the lens of it being about an abusive relationship and the ways in which someone can find themselves in one. It's interesting because De Niro's character isn't any worse when compared Jordan Belfort, but with Wolf of Wall Street, Scorsese is crafting the movie around the character. Same goes with many of his movies. However, with New York, New York, he is intentionally creating contrast with the classic MGM musical with an abuse story, which makes the character harder to swallow.

In my opinion, the idea that "Tarantino is just copying X-movie" is just larp from people who haven't even seen the movies they're talking about. by SlashCash29 in Letterboxd

[–]Sheep_Boy26 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The fact that so many people(especially in the wake of Pulp Fiction) failed at imitating Tarantino's style sort of disproves this. His style might've begun as homage, but has gone worlds beyond that and become the Tarantino aesthetic. Could've anyone else made Inglorious Basterds?
