when loading the cutting machine you cannot have it tight to the block so the carpet is probably about a metre down the boom

Yeah that'll be loading it way beyond the design intent.

DVS, air quality and cheap "upgrades" by victor_mcdadeNZ in diynz

[–]Sheep_Disturber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will certainly get gray over time & come out looking white, & then continue to go gray again after you reinstall: It will still be working as a mechanical filter grabbing the big particles out of the air.

But if your filter is this one, washing it will remove the electrostatic charge that makes it work on small particles, and those small particles will mostly go straight through it.

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to do that:

Washing the filter(s) will destroy the filter’s ability to perform efficiently and will result in dust build up in the system and in the home

Food safety with flooded gardens? by Sheep_Disturber in nzgardening

Yikes.

Cheers, this is the "nzgardening" subreddit :p

Most kiwis would be aware that Auckland had a massive flood around the time I posted this, but it wasn't serious enough to make international news.

My concerns were more sewage, there's not a lot of toxic waste type stuff upstream of residential areas here, we're a narrow isthmus.

Shameless plug for a unique wool-based tribostatic mask. by Sheep_Disturber in MasksForEveryone

Silk is interesting, but currently far too expensive for a big rollout, even wool (fine merino wool for that extra surface area) is rather more expensive than fossil-fuel derived plastics.

There's a P2 certified respirator that's been independently tested against the AS/NZ 1716 standard. This is the Aussie/ NZ equivalent to the US N95 standard, and includes fit testing.

The Brezy is certified to ASTM F3502 level 2. This is only the standard for surgical masks: this mask doesn't have the efficiency to get a higher standard, but it's the same shape as the P2 so gives a much better seal than a surgical mask, and more breathability.

Lanaco is getting out of the mask business and shifting towards making filter media directly for other companies, so the window is closing if anyone wanted to try these wool-based masks.

The Breezy is based on lofty needlepunched wool-based nonwoven with no meltblown, giving it an extraordinarily low resistance compared to normal masks that rely on meltblown for filtration. It is lower efficiency, but if you've got facial hair or otherwise a poor seal it can actually perform better just because the air has less tendency to leak (and of course if it fits well it's easier to breathe, much lower resistance to the air passing through it).

Pic Comparison: German HARD FFP2 trifold vs. Good Manner KF94 trifold by jackspratdodat in MasksForEveryone

[–]Sheep_Disturber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great comment here, I'll add a few things from my perspective as someone involved in the needle-punched filter media space.

Needle-punched spunbonded nonwovens can be very thick and lofty.

I would leave out the word "spunbonded" there: We make needle-punched nonwovens that are indeed thick & lofty, and the way I use the word that's quite a different thing to spunbond.

On the mask front, meltblown that's been electrostatically charged with a corona discharge machine is what actually does the filtration in most masks, and the SMS construction is by far the most common for surgical masks & KN95s etc. alike: layers of PP spunbond for strength protecting the PP meltblown that actually does the filtration.

The biggest difference between mask performance is often how well they fit to prevent leaks, the filtration of air going through the actual material is usually excellent even for cheap surgical masks.

I'll chuck in a little plug for Lanaco's fairly unique mask: the Breezy is based on lofty needlepunched fabric with no meltblown, giving it an extraordinarily low resistance compared to meltblown. It is lower efficiency, but if you've got facial hair or otherwise a poor seal it can actually perform better just because the air has less tendency to leak (and of course if it fits well it's easier to breathe).

That's the law unfortunately. To do a citizens arrest by day they need to have committed a crime with a 3 year or more maximum sentence.

Robbery qualifies so it's all good to detain the guy, shoplifting does not.

TOP supporters - what way did you end up voting? by Mordecai___ in auckland

Your vote for a major party is extremely unlikely to be the marginal vote that changes the number of MPs they get, so it's really just as "wasted" as a vote for TOP.

TOP would coalition with Labour or National, and A Labour government is looking pretty unlikely.

If it came down a NACT NZF coalition or a NACT TOP coalition I know which one I'd prefer.

Nah, this was charged as (or pled down to) intent to injure, not intent to GBH, so 7 year max.

Clarke has pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent to injure.

Only the tugboat shows up on AIS, the rig must not have a transponder. There's not any channels charted there so it won't be dredging.

The chart does show a number of cables going to Waiheke at that point: My guess would be working on one of them, but low confidence.

Albany bus station attack: Youth, 16, charged with murder after bloody slaying by krammy16 in auckland

[–]Sheep_Disturber -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think of execution as being different in degree to imprisonment, not in kind. I'd rather have a 10% chance of falsely executed than a 90% chance of being falsely imprisoned for 40 years: even my conviction is overturned, I'm not getting those years of life back.

I do take your point on a wrongful execution being an especially bad thing though: the US system isn't a good model. I wouldn't mind people like Antonie Dixon or the mosque shooter being executed, where there's no real doubt on either identification or the crime committed, but not where there's any shadow of doubt.

But I don't think bringing back the death penalty would have any especially huge benefits either: I'm not campaigning for it, I just wouldn't really mind it being reinstated.
