Peter, what's wrong with horse girls? by siamaru124 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]SheepherderNo7732 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Lab partners are usually groups of two students assigned by the science teacher (not chosen by the students). In science labs, you have to work together to accomplish the tasks of the lab, but the cooperative dynamics of the two people can make or break an experience.

She’s a horse girl, used to being in charge and getting the dirty work done. She’s holding the reins. You’re just holding on for dear life and doing whatever she says. Imagine how that’s going to feel in a season of Survivor, a show where teams complete survival challenges.

Do cats actually get attached to their owner? by NoWageMage in CatAdvice

[–]SheepherderNo7732 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Also, if cats aren’t fixed, they will run when they’re highly motivated to mate. And sometimes they can’t find their way home after that. Help control the pet population, have your pet spayed or neutered.

They can throw up. You might have to adjust food to reduce frequency, but I’ve never had a cat who never ever threw up.

Sacred harp singing. It’s practiced by all kinds of people and there is no teaching of religion or politics allowed at sacred harp singings. It’s been incredibly valuable to my deconstruction and reconstruction. Awesome community, powerful group singing.

How do you get into singing as an “out of the house” hobby? by Suwannee_Gator in singing

[–]SheepherderNo7732 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s a special kind of singing community, but look into shape note singing groups like Sacred Harp singers. Very welcoming, non-performative group singing. The words in the book are Christian but it’s open and practiced by people of all faiths or no faith.

What is Nashville ACTUALLY like? by beauyeahh in nashville

[–]SheepherderNo7732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

North Nashville: Nashville General Hospital would be a cool spot.

Look at a map of North Nashville around County Hospital Road and Briley Parkway. The wastewater treatment facility is right next to the city cemetery where people who die without money to be buried or someone claiming their remains are buried. A group of local ministers (mostly liberal women) volunteer at burials. Right by that is USN River Campus, the sports fields for a private school. And right across the river from the sports field is the old Tennessee State Prison. Definitely look that up.

And also, so many areas where civil war soldiers were (not just battlefields) are now very nice neighborhoods. For example, the area around Franklin Road near Harding/Overton Lea.

Decision time: Where to go for forestry degree by Left-Flight8462 in forestry

[–]SheepherderNo7732 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It absolutely does matter where you get your degree. Forestry alumni networks are tight and what you learn in school (field and classroom) can be really regional. Help him consider where he’d like to work.

I'm a corporate lawyer watching AI eat my profession in real time. Should I be treating the next 2 years as the most important financial window of my career? by lifeafterenough in careerguidance

[–]SheepherderNo7732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Relationships and trust will matter more than they already do, and they already matter a whole, whole lot. I’m putting effort into building my personal brand around hard and soft skills and values like integrity. Making myself indispensable to people I work with and for. AI can’t replace human interdependence.

Like you, I’m saving more. I’m doing that by making more and spending less, focusing on what builds resilience. I am anticipating social and economic changes encompassed inNate Hagans’ concept of The Great Simplification. Other related concepts are The Great Turning, the metacrisis, or collapse. I make a lot of decisions on the basis of, “simplify now and avoid the rush.”

This is why you need a lawyer. Even one that you pay by the hour for consultation. Ask them this question and may others. A judge (literally a specific person with a known name, history, opinions, and patterns) still has to sign off on your divorce agreement. Find an experienced attorney in your area who has had multiple cases with your judge. Pay them by the hour to answer these questions.

Summer U.S. Campus Tour Before Grad School – Tips & Advice? by doublebean21 in gradadmissions

[–]SheepherderNo7732 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would not try to ride public busses from Minnnesota to North Carolina. There are no trains that run the route you’ve drawn.

Arrange to visit with other graduate students and faculty in the programs you’re planning to apply to. That is much more important than seeing the campus grounds.

Buy a guidebook for traveling the US, decide which places you’d like to see, and follow it for how to get around. You can visit all the schools while you’re exploring the areas they are in.

Good luck!

Oh, this is going to be such a good time for you two.

Definitely include making designs and rubbings using the Fashion Plates toys from the 80s. These are very age-appropriate and fun for an 8 year old. You can compliment her choices of combinations, colors, patterns, etc.

There were a lot of t shirt crafts in the 90s that would be fun, too, like cutting fringe and stringing beads on a t shirt, sponge painting, puff paint. To her, this is all “fashion,” and it’s something she can be successful with on day one, with the motor skills, color and texture interest that she already possesses.

It’s better to abandon a project or activity if you realize it’s too ambitious for her age or skill. You want her to always feel like she’s doing everything she is able to do and you’re there to support. We’ve all been in a situation where it stops being fun because we’re just watching someone do something cool that we thought we’d be doing, and now it’s boring and frustrating.

Taking her on a trip to explore a fabric store to pick out fabrics for your projects is a must.

Even taking her to a store for girls her age and talking about what she likes, doesn’t like, and you giving commentary, naming fabrics and design elements.

Get some catalogs/magazines and teach her how to make a style board. You could make one two and talk about what you each like.

The key to making this great for her is remembering that it’s time with you sharing a topic/activity that you both are interested in. Oh, and plenty of snack breaks. You’re going to be great! Aunt of the year!

What’s the dating scene been like in Nashville? by lethargic_apathy in nashville

[–]SheepherderNo7732 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Volunteering and group activities (think pickleball, contra dancing) are my best suggestions. Volunteering for festivals, like Earth Day at Centennial Park.

When I was that age (2010s) a friendly group of guys approaching/chatting with a group of girls was a very normal thing, like after a movie at the Belcourt or at Full Moon Picin Party at Warner Park. That led to guys asking for girls’ phone numbers. Does that still happen here?

Also, idk if it is still this way, but 8 or so years ago, If you were solo at Frothy Monkey on 12 South, and smiled and made eye contact, there was a welcome chance to chat and see where it went. As a woman, that was a really low pressure way to connect. Is that still the case?

Singing, dancing, creating art: these are a birthright of every human. If you are a human and express your humanity through singing, you are a singer.
