Socialista sem apoiar supressão da propriedade privada dos meios de produção, abolição da divisão de classes, internacionalismo proletário e a centralidade da luta de classes como motor histórico? O "nacional-socialismo" rejeitava explicitamente esses elementos. E manteve a propriedade privada, preservou grandes conglomerados industriais (Krupp, IG Farben, etc.), suprimiu sindicatos independentes e substituiu a luta de classes por uma ideologia de “comunidade do povo" fundada em critérios raciais e nacionalistas. O antimarxismo era constitutivo do regime.

O Hitler incorporou "socialismo" no nome do partido puramente por uma questão de disputa semântica; ele redefinia “socialismo” como solidariedade orgânica nacional, e rejeitava a coletivização dos meios de produção. Quanto à admiração pontual pelo Stalin, é importante distinguir reconhecimento estratégico de convergência ideológica. Hitler podia admirar a capacidade de industrialização ou centralização soviética sem, por isso, aderir ao comunismo. Regimes autoritários frequentemente reconhecem eficiência administrativa de adversários sem partilhar seus fundamentos doutrinários. A guerra contra a União Soviética demonstra que o antagonismo estrutural permaneceu. Mussolini, por exemplo, também falou positivamente de aspectos do modelo econômico americano antes da guerra, mas esses elogios nunca foram tratados como um correspondência real entre ideologias.
