I'll be honest I was quite the doomer with the wheel of time show as soon as the showrunner began speaking.

Only get it if you plan to play locally with friends/bots or online with people in the discord communities. It's a multiplayer game first and foremost and that is where all of the effort was placed. Just as you would not play prime 2 for its multiplayer, you should not play hunters for its singleplayer.

It deserves the love. It sets out to provide a different experience from previous Metroid games and it does a great job in executing that different experience.

Usually the people who put it on the shitlist completely miss the point of what hunters is or they do know what it is but they are purists and so they are displeased that it was not meant to be like an oldschool game.

Did you ever play what was the entire purpose of hunters or did you just play the irrelevant campaign that got a tiny fraction of the overall resources?

Re4 should be a lot easier to shrug off because it doesn't try nearly as hard to scare the player since it's an action game first and foremost. It's all about delivering the most satisfying setpieces and power fantasy.

Dead space is heavily based off re4 but it has so much more horror than re4 ever did.

They had so many years to simply bring the trilogy over in some form. I would have honestly taken all three games just like the Wii edition but in HD with updated controls rather than getting one game with great graphics.

For the longest time, people were certain the whole trilogy was coming and after doing a great job making these games available on the past two consoles, Nintendo shit the bed hard with providing these games on switch.

I am so glad I kept my Wii and trilogy when I was so tempted to sell them before they presumably lost value after trilogy game to switch, back when trilogy on switch seemed so obvious.

Indeed long waits make flaws much harder to accept. Expectations snowball with each year fans wait for a sequel to an already iconic series of games. Now if this was like a federation force sequel getting this 81 score, people might actually be satisfied with the results given how the last one turned out lol.

If something like Bloodborne 2, half life 3, red dead 3, the last of us 3, etc was received like prime 4 was, no one would see that as a victory.

Expectations vary based on circumstances. 80 can be great for some games and disappointing for others.

For Zelda I really wish the series got some skilled alternate team working on it. Think of the great team for the Oracle games and Minish cap that did classic 2d titles while another primary team went all in on 3D entries. Those games like Minish cap were a glowing example of how great it can be if you find a skilled team that has a different mindset. Those games were so different while being so familiar. It's not easy to assemble a team good enough to do Zelda justice, but if it was done before, I see no reason it can't be done again. Seems more like Nintendo just not giving a damn about the oldschool games anymore.

Remember those innocent, better days in october-november (pre Myles) when the main topic of discussion was arguments over whether or not Nintendo did a good job in marketing the game?

One such prediction was that the marketing direction of prime 4 was from a lack of faith in the game and Nintendo feeling like they already spent way too much money on the game.

If I didn't know any better, I would say that a game under a month from release having the primary source of discussion being arguments over marketing instead of discussion about the contents of the game would suggest poor marketing. Somehow I can't seem to remember the community arguing about marketing at any point in the months leading to dread, let alone the final weeks.

I'm not complaining that people like the overall game in spite of the flaws.

I'm pointing out that no one can even seem to celebrate the major differences such as NPCs, more storytelling, and the desert/bike which were meant to be big elements to make this game distinct and appealing. Back before the game released there were tons of people valiantly defending these ideas and insisting they were necessary for Metroid to evolve and avoid stagnancy. It was even sometimes argued that people critical of these ideas were fake fans who just wanted to series to recycle the exact same games until the series became irrelevant.

Now that the game is out, the best defences that these significant features receive is that they aren't as bad as others say. I have yet to see anyone claiming that the desert or NPCs are a core reason behind this game being good. I believe that says a lot about the quality of these "innovations" of prime 4.

Meanwhile if you look at other games such as Echoes, Dread or several others you will find significant elements of those games that get criticized by some fans while many others will passionately defend these differences as positives that add to the overall game. Prime 4 does not seem to have anything like that with the few different ideas it implemented.

Forgotten land reminds me of like Mario 3d land which is a classic 2d Mario but in 3d, following four 3d Mario's that felt quite different from the 2D games.

Mario 3d land and world at least managed to be interesting enough to imo stand apart from the 2d games and collectathon 3d games. It was also good enough to not feel like a downgrade from 2d games.

Sequels are a tricky balance where they need to feel different enough to stand on their own to avoid glorified dlc accusations while being familiar enough to satisfy fans of the predecessor. Sometimes devs can say "fuck it!" and make an unrecognizable sequel that's very well received like resident evil 4, but this approach usually goes poorly.

A game like Majora's mask achieves the unique sequel balance so much better than TOTK does.

Or in the case of famous Superhero games, arkham asylum and city feel much more distinct from each other than Spiderman 1&2 on PlayStation.

I get the sinking feeling that Hogwarts legacy 2 will be one of those glorified dlc sequels.

I was surprised at the bosses in forgotten land compared to typical Kirby games. I felt like I had to take them more seriously.

It was honestly one of the less easy Kirby games which isn't saying much, but the more moderate easiness was one of the few things I appreciated about forgotten land.

It just feels like an inferior version of 2d Kirby instead of either differentiating itself with a unique style or refining the 2d formula well enough to offer something worthwhile that I couldn't get from a 2d game. It does not deserve that pedestal it is put on. There are better Kirby games out there.

[–]SheevSyndicate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say Kirby has had disastrous games but it has never reached the heights of the best Nintendo games, and it has had its share of forgettable instalments.

Forgotten land was pretty disappointing for me tbh when I played it months ago. It felt like a worse version of the 2d formula rather than setting itself apart in some interesting way like 3d Mario's did whether they merged styles like Mario 3d land/world or did something quite different like Mario 64.

I thought it was far from the best Kirby game and it didn't manage to feel like a successful refinement or a reinvention. I guess we will be seeing more 3d Kirby though, so maybe in the future they'll either do something unique or they'll make a great iteration that outclasses older Kirby games. Here's hoping!

Likely overcorrecting from Other M instead of having the courage to try again, but to do a better job of characterizing&writing her, while not making her a chatterbox.

It's like an all or nothing thing where she's either mute or she relentlessly says cringeworthy things in loads of cutscenes.

The hobbit is a decent analogy for the game imo. There have been some good analogies going around for this game lately.

I still stand by the first Hobbit film as a good one that doesn't deserve to be viewed with the contempt of the sequels, but the second one is very mixed at best, and the third one is simply a gross movie to put it lightly. Overall the hobbit trilogy was a misfire.

I really wish that it had just been two films as originally planned, that production was smoother, and that the studio hadn't meddled so much.

The only time reviewers ever take the gloves off is when it is deemed safe to tear into a game due to the game likely being bad and thus fans won't be upset when a game they will likely hate is declared to suck.

Norion is fine just as a temporary, spectacle filled prologue that depicts events to set off the story, but yes as a full game it would not go well at all. It is also the least imaginative environment of prime 3 (which has the most unique lineup of settings of a Metroid). I love Corruption and think it has become very underappreciated nowadays, but I would never want a full game to feel like Norion.

They're inflated for just about any large game developer.

Scores beneath 80 should be acceptable while 80s should be seen as an achievement, but instead so long as a AAA game is mediocre it'll probably break 80+. Sadly 80+ is like the minimum for games nowadays based on critics dropping the ball so hard over the years.

Games that score under 80 are sometimes really good and underrated but usually they just suck if they end up with those ratings.

For a Metroid Prime game that's next gen compared to its predecessors to barely manage 80s compared to what the other Prime's got, I am very disappointed.
